Stupid Knoppix tricks
« on: 20 October 2002, 21:25 »
I'm posting this message from my brand-spanking new Knoppix 3.1 install!
YES!!! I've been able to install the distro that runs off a CD to my H.D.; it's the equivilent of Debian unstable; it defaults to KDE 3.0 for a WM, and it just looks great!
If you want to have a state of the art Debian install, here's what you do; boot your Knoppix CD, when the splash screen starts, hit F2 and select knoppix 2; this will start a CLI with root privileges.  Enter /usr/local/bun/knx-hdinstall, this will start the installer and allow you to partition your H.D. (make sure you're not going to wipe out any data you want to keep!!).  When you've finished partitioning, you will be asked if you want to install the Knoppix files and where to install them; select the partition you just created, it will take 10-40 minutes.  Once the files are installed, various dialogues will open to create root account, user account, what partition to use for swap, etc.  It's easier to do than to read this post, so just go do it!!

Uhhhhh..... if you decide to edit /fstab , BE CAREFUL; I just blew up my install; oh well, I did it once, I can do it again; this time, I'm gonna go about it a little different.

Why didn't you just boot up your Knoppix CD, mount the root file system on the hard drive, then fix the fstab rather than reinstalling?
Someone please remove this account. Thanks...

I don't like knoppix because it wouldn't let me connect to the internet.
DHCP makes it a damn simple task!

I was guessing a LOT on the first install; there were other things I didn't care for, so I'll install again- it really doesn't take that long.

Before I installed to the H.D., I had no problem connecting; now that it's installed, I can only connect as ROOT; I've got to dick around with the settings, I guess.

Knoppix is shweet!  :D

I downloaded Knoppix so I could use it at work (they have some Winblows 2000, some Sun Workstations and some Red Hat's) if I got a Win2K machine. I also use it at school where they have Win2K's only, and I can't touch the HDD.

It boots pretty damn fast, but it takes an extra 3 minutes...it keeps saying something about some memory locations. Oh well. It's still cool.

RECOMMEND THIS TO NOOBS! It doesn't touch your HDD, and it automounts everything. Perfect for the lazy person who doesn't want to partition before they try it.

Virtual Linux kicks ass too, it is a CD bootable Mandrake distro. Pretty awesome and great for those who arent convinced that linux is for them yet.

My ISO was an English version, so I had no problem; however, I'm gonna post a link that could help you out- it's the Knoppix forum at LinuxTag, a German site, but this link will take you to the English section of the forum- I remember seeing a post that dealt with your situation.

Were you able to change the language?  If not, I'm going to do a re-install later and I'll see if I have to do something to enable an English installation; I don't remember doing anything before, but I'm old, so I may have and forgotten doing it.  Uhhhh.... what were we talking about?  Do I know you?  Where are we?  What day is it?
