red hat pentium?

i was shopping Linux distros online today, just making some comparisons, especially under system requirements.  Suse claims (as expected) that it will run on just about anything.  but Red Hat requires a "pentium class" computer.  meaning, i assume, that it won't work on a 486.  what up wit dat?  is Red Hat bloated or turbocharged?

I dont know really, i'm sure you could get the source and compile it on a 486 and it'll run fine (slowly probably though). I just dont think they compile it for the 486ers anymore.

If you have a 486 it probably won't hurt to put an older distro on it.

just curious is all - Red Hat is pretty famous, and i'd hate to see them end up like Elvis.

RedHat isn't bloated

It will still work on a 486

SuSE and RH have different business models, RH saying you need a Pentium class processor is good advertising for intel because people see RH as the Linux Benchmark.

SuSE on the other hand has a relationship with AMD.
Thats why SuSE advertises it has 64bit Processor support.

I purchased a commercial copy of Slackware 9, and it proudly states on the back support for 386, with 16mb ram, and 500 mb hard drive, but it includes zip slack if you have a smaller hard drive than that......lol.
