RedHat 7.3 | Gnome 2.0
« on: 24 July 2002, 04:19 »
I have a fresh install of RH7.3 with no current desktop.  I would like to install Gnome 2.0 and not spend 5 hours compiling it but if thats what I came down to, I could very well do it.  Also I would like to avoid using Ximians Red Carpet Service but once again, I can do it if I run out of choices.

How would I go about installing Gnome 2.0 without Ximian and Compiling it myself?

garnome would probably automate the build process, but im getting ready to build it and some gnome 1.4 libs for ChoasNETOS, the only problem i had was taht sawfish 2 wouldn't compile, and it was cuase a broken makefile, so i used metacity

Garnome, The bleed edge in Gnome Development.  I'll give it a shot and another thing.  Would it be possible to turn off the Inline Post Thing?  When you reply, it just takes the page and slaps it in some frames where if you turn it off, to the appropriate settings it just writes a few tables which is much easier to view and generally more clean.

Here comes a big splash of ignorance!

http://www.gnome.org/~jdub/garnome/download/?N=D

I just download this the latest version of this garnome which is only 34K and it will begin to build gnome for me?  How?  Does it download the files and if so how would someone who doesn't have a continual (spelling, not for everybody) internet connection use this?  Sorry for looking like a newbie but I am in this field so any help would be greatly appreciated.

never used it, i think it downloads eacs package at a time, and im pretty sure its a shell script. so you could probabbly hack it to use the already donwloaded stuff, but i would recommend just lettingit go, unless you have a 56k modems, cuase then i would say, download it all at once and build it your self like i did and am going to do again

nah, I'll stick with the legit procedures.  But thank you and wish me luck!  Next time you see me, I shall be in mozilla or insane, perhaps a little of both.

now, heres a question.  i've read the instruction guide on the site and it gives me a very limited "when your done" direction.  I'm sitting here with a million terminals open and still no real desktop.  They have told me to enter a few lines in my Xsession which is for Debians GDM or whatever its called.  I want to know what I have to do to make Gnome 2.0 the default desktop and startup when I turn on my pc.  Thanks in Advanced!

gnome2 is completely built, took about 4 hours but its done.  Now everytime I reboot I just return to the terminal in which I began in.  I would like gnome2 to start everytime i start my pc.

all ready set that way, I get X11 with a cheap Free86 login screen but after that it sends me to a blank blue screen with a very skimpy windowing system.  I have to access everything through a terminal.  I want gnome2 to startup and i'm not quite sure how to do that, also, where is my .Xsession located with a default installation of RedHat 7.3?

well, i scrapped the idea of getting gnome 2.0 due to the fact that redhat does have a stable release with it and i don't feel like waiting 4 hours to see if the "next" build will work so BLAH.  One a good note though I got Gnome 1.4 with wine working and the Nvidia Drivers!  Now all I need is to get winex, i'm slightly upset at the give us money and you get a better winex deal but.... what are ya gonna do.
