Xine DVD help please?

i know this may not be up most people's street, but i tried to play a dvd for the first time in xine today, it plays vcds fine, but all it does is play the sound and show a blank screen with a dvd. Do i need to download something or change a parameter? it is the rpm of xine that i got with my mandrake 8.2 CD, so it's 'out of the box' tastic. thanks in advance.

Sorry. Well to be honest I'm surprised you can play evil encrypted DVD's at all without having installed a css plugin (or have you, or is it not encrypted?) which is why I thought installing the d5d plugin might be a good first step. Especially considering it'll be virtually effortless to install it.

yeah, i know, but i am pretty clueless about the whole dvd thing really.

i do have that captain css stuff on a cd somewhere. so far i have just installed the rpm of xine and nothing else, so no css stuff would have come with it (it being illegal and so on!)

the dvd in question (the only one i own) is a UK one, it is the Air videos DVD which comes free when you buy the lp 'Everybody Hertz' by Air. I bought the lp for the videos (the lp is okay, but too repetitive, however it also has two live tracks as .mov files. Can't play them in xine either!) and it seems like a waste of

I'm a newbie to Linux, so take my word for it when it comes to getting your DVD drive working.

Get the Ogle rpms! Easy to download, easy to install with the rpms anyway.

I use SuSe 7.3 and a Pioneer 116.  The files from the Ogle site include decryption!!!!!!!!!!

I couldn't figure out how to apply the patch to xine so I needed an easier fix. Ogle was it!

If you want a DVD player, Ogle is what you need. Xine is fine for playing downloadable content, but you save it to your drive anyways. I am sure you have Xaviplay, and Enjoympeg, so why would you need something else? They all save it then load it......either way you are wasting disk space...

ok, thanks for the answers, it will be a wee while till i get to try them, i just had one of my famous formatting accidents and need to try to reinstigate a working dual boot system again in severely crippled circumstances. Anyway, my real question is, say i got all those two dozen rpms up there, and i have most of them already. When i try to install them, what are the odds i find about eight dozen dependencies? this is the reason i don't like having to install more than one rpm to get something working.

Recently i got an rpm for a sega master system emulator. Four dependencies. Same with a NES emulator. Not a chance that would happen in windows. And that's not slagging linux, it's slagging the rpms.
