Modem irritation once more.

hiya. i just went to the smartlink site to have another go at making this modem work in linux.
I downloaded both the i386 and i686 versions and installed the i686 version first.
It comes as a tar.gz file and you just unzip, make and make install as per usual.
It installed with no errors at all, and i ran kppp.
I then received the message "Cannot Open Modem" and when i go into kppp 'misc' menu and query the modem i get 'the modem does not respond'.
i then installed the i386 version. again, no errors, same problems with modem.
This modem works fine with the windows drivers also from smartlink, and in fact the windows drivers i use are older.
here is the subprocess stuff from when kppp fails, any idea what i can do about this?:
also, i have made sure that i am using the right device name/block device for the modem.

The surest cure for those WinModem blues is to ditch the sucker and replace it with a real modem. I favor the US Robotics 56K external. To get one new isn't exactly cheap, but there are often good deals available on eBay. You might want to consider that instead.

yes i know, but the bugger is an internal modem and i don't want to have to lug another external box around (already have one of those radio mice with receiver and an external cd burner (which does not work with linux at all, and barely works with windows, due to mitsubishi-electric's shoddy attempt at drivers) so i would prefer getting this one to work since there's actually a real driver for linux for it from the actual manufacturer. I suppose i could get a PC card modem, but then i have never tested my PC card slots, so maybe they don't work in linux either! (i have a laptop you see, in case you hadn't gathered, so i am loath to buy any new kit, even though the kit inside this machine is so eccentric that it might invent a new kind of wrong soon!)

I know a store around here that sells them for about 30 or 20 bucks
