« on: 14 June 2002, 02:25 »
I've decided to give it a try so i downloaded the 3 iso images for Red Hat linux. burned them to a cd put  disc 1 in the cd drive re-booted and nothing happens..i switched my boot sequence to boot the cd rom first..i have a Dell 4100 PIII 933 with 256 mb ram. if i look at the contents of the first cd,in windows, it looks like a dos program. in dos it says vahal~1 exe ..if i type that in under dos it says program to big to fit into memory..whats happening did i burn it wrong or what??? I followed the instructions on the red hat page for burning iso images.for cd creator. i also downloade mandrake and the same thing happens..nothing...Help me if you can i'm feeling down..thanks  zubknarf

ok it looks like you burned the cd's right its just your computer that is not co-operating, if your using redhat 7.3 this should work great. ok take the dos boot disk and boot the computer up with it and stick the first redhat cd in it. then go to the dosutils folder, and type in
autoboot.bat
that should work
have fun

Windows XP practically installs itself, and you can either run the setup program from Windows or you can boot from the CD.

I've been using windows for at least 5 years and thought i'd try something else just for kicks. If there is a better operating system out there i would like to try it, I've heard alot of good things about Linux so i though i'd give it a whirl...Variety is the spice of life...Think!! zubknarf...anyways i tried to download the boot disk and it says it's to big to put on a floppy disk !!! what's with that???

Did you read the installation document?  Which distro are you downloading the boot disk for?

There are good REABMEs on the CD. Look for the program 'rawwrite.exe' on the disk and it will have instructions on creating a linux boot disk.

I dont know how well WinXP installs, but i know that i have been trying for about a month to get win98 or winNT to install on a computer.

More Bullshit:

"Windows XP practically installs itself, and you can either run the setup program from Windows or you can boot from the CD"

Well, considering the fact that most CD-ROM medias are boot-compatible from most modern BIOS (thanks to Micro$hit and their influence over the neo-neaderthol market that is comprised of shitheads such as yourself) it shouldn't be too hard to boot a Linux distro, either from the burned ISO (if you did it correctly) of if you actually shelled out the $40 or so to buy the distro from a third party.  If you did the latter, at least you are paying good money from some people that deserve it, unlike the shitheads from the Seattle area that are dying quicker than their cruddy music scene.

XPissant...fuck off and die.

And just for a fun paraphrase (I love Kindergarten):

"SuSE practically runs intself.  Just throw in the CD into one of your drives, hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete (like you have become acoustomed to), and it practically installs itself."

i,m trying to install Red Hat 7.3 . I'm starting to think i didn't burn the disc right. If i boot the computer into dos with the me start up disc and look at the cd it says 1 file o dir's the file name is valhal~1 exe. cannot open that cause it's to large to fit into memory. I using cd creator platinum . the instructions seem to say you first make a cd image then burn it from the image is that right or is it already an image?? the files i downloaded are named valhalla-i386-disc1.iso dics2.iso and disc3.iso.. After i make an image of them they are cd creator image files..If i look at the cd in windows it looks like a dos file and reads the same name as the file i downloaded valhalla-386-disc1.iso....maybe i should just go out and buy the cd pack at office max or something!! thanks zubknarf

yeah hes right, most computers are cdrom-boot compatible, if you burn the cd as a cd image and not burn the iso a file on the disk i used to do that all the time, if i doesn't boot then something is wrong with your hardware/bois config

You have to look at your burning software documentation for the appropriate way to write ISO images for  your software.  You did nothing more than copy the ISO image files to the CD.  The ISO images contain the iso9660 filesystem so they have to be burned directly to CD not on top of an existing iso9660 filesystem.  Almost all burning software has this capability.

XPissant,

Dude, just fucking go away.  You contribute absolutely nothing here except being the board's whipping boy.  XP is fucking garbage, so you can take your linx and shove it up you Redmond-gang-banged ass.

Back to what this board is for: To the guy who asked about buring ISO images to CDs, there is a good help file here at linuxiso.org that explains the whole process.  I just burned Debian last night with Nero and it works fine

I don't download Linux ISOs since I have dial-up and it would simply take a dog's age (several, in fact). You can get Linux CDs fromLinux Central. None are over $9.95 + S&H, and some are as low as $2.95. Another good source is Edmunds Enterprises; their CDs are even less. I think the most expensive ones they offer are $2.00 + S&H, and most go for $0.99. Both have fast deliveries, so you'll have your CDs in two to three days. Edmunds also offers Linux soft on CD. That's where I got KDE 3.0 for Slack. It's not a lot to pay, and you get high quality CDs.
