I want a OS that is stable (linux), but i think that linux isn't ready for the commercial world against microsoft. I want to find a way to run all my microsoft programms on windows (like games). The wine project isn't good enough to handle complicated games like CS. I want to convince people to use linux instead of windows and mozilla (or other) instead of IE, Openoffice.org (or other) instead of microsoft office. If we can convince people to use linux instead of windows, a whole new (opensource) market will open for alternative OS users. I'm prepared to bring as many new desktopusers to linux as possible.

good for you     My mom...a clueless computer person a few months ago got proficient at Linux (mepis) much faster than windows...I think it's nearly ready to compete...all thats left is more software vendors need to write programs for it.
Microsoft is not the answer.
Microsoft is the question.
"No" is the answer!
The nice thing about Windows is - It does not just crash, it displays a dialog box and lets you press 'OK' first.

Your best choice would be Mac OS X. You can get lots of commercial software and games, including M$ Office, and it's very easy to use. As for Windoze apps, you can always use Virtual PC.

By the way, OS X is based on UNIX, too. And its underlying system (Darwin) is open source.

I'm not really a MAC fan, but i don't have anything against the system. They don't try to destroy their opponents.

Why are you saying that WINE can't handle CS? HAVE YOU TRIED IT?

I've managed to run Steam, Trillian and Unreal Tournament in WINE so far (UT 2004 is for Linux too, doesn't need WINE).
You just have to choose OpenGL, not Direct3D    (the UT 2004 Linux version is OpenGL + SDL).

Oh come on Laukev7, this is the linux forum, stop boosting macs in here, unless you want me to come over to the mac forum and suggest everyone use linux.   :D    :D    :D

Anyway, fireprog wine can easily handle Counter Strike, and several windows games, but WineX, the commercial version of wine has much greater game support and can play games like Max Payne 2, and WarCraft 3. It does cost money, but consider it a savings, after all MS Windows costs a lot more.

Alright then, sorry for that. I've been a bit too eager to post something that's actually related to alternatives to Microsoft.  :D  But there's a little ambiguity that needs to be addressed here:

I know reason, game is looking for *registry k3ys" and i dont have it setup. BTW anybody knows how to "add registry keys for wine?". Sure i could install game, but i dont have installation setup.

Do you mean you don't have the CD.
If so,
try to download games that end on .exe (only for educational use        ).
You could also let a friend extract it on a Windows box.

Sadly most games need 3D acceleration(not all).
If you don't have an nvidia card, you can't use them in WineX.

PS: Loki doesn't exist anymore, but their software still does. You can still use it to download, install and play many "demo-games"(all native Linux).
