1) how would i open a *.wps MS-Works file in red hat 8?

2) is there any one-stop app that can allow me to use mp3s and oggs to burn a music CD without having to manually convert to wav in between?

i dont think you will get one that helps.
does openOffice support msWorks files? if not that would be something i think should be available.

You could try this site. The trouble is this effect seems unstable. Gcombust tried it and gave up for the time being.

You might also actually try using a text editor on .wps files.

I remember that .wps files would often not be recognised by M$ office, and as I searched around I discovered that the .wps format is even more messed up then the .doc format, and that people have had sucess with text editors and office suites, standard write programs (hint Koffice might be a good choice to try) and various spreadsheet programs. They have also failed miserably with the same.

I do not know of any even close to sure fire options for .wps files, especially as I don't even know what version of the M$ works software this is.

for burning cds i use K3B. I am not sure if it converts from mp3 to wav but i shall try now. It seems to use cdrao to burn them but i did not have drivers. You might want to try it any ways though. You can get it through apt-get so installation is easy.It also is able to rip dvds.

thank you for all your replies. i never would have thought of trying to recover the text out of a .wps file. kword doesn't work, abiword doesn't work, openoffice.org doesn't work. i did find somebody on slashdot saying his wps files opened in kword, but you know it doesn't work.

The real solution would be for me to get the guy to send me the documents again in .doc format (it seems that .txt and .rtf are beyond his ability to understand). that's what's even more dumb, you can save as .doc files in msworks, so why use wps format? dumb. as for staroffice, i don't think i can get it now for free, and i only have the windows version (of 5.2) and what with me owning openoffice and not being a business, i don't want to pay for staroffice at present.

as for burning cds from mp3s, i found it was easy to convert mp3s and oggs to wavs using the xmms cdwriter output plugin, i didn't realise it would be so easy. and with xcdroast and a 48 speed CDwriter, i think i can live without my one stop app actually.
