I prefer KDE 3.0 atm.

The only serious competitor is Enlightenment for me - I tried the other popular ones but I don't like 'em. I've got an old version of Enlightenment though, and that one's not as good as KDE IMHO. I'd try a newer version, but I'm convicted to eternal (well, maybe not eternal) 56k hell, so that's not really an option.
My system is in need for a reinstall though (this is still my experimental install, back from my Win/Linux-dualboot-days - and not everything went  well, leaving me with a decent amount of garbage). When I finally do that, I'll use a recent distro, with hopefully a recent Enlightenment too.

if it wasn't for the 56k prob, you could always try ChoasNETOS, its fast, well, as fast as it's gonna be able to be boot straped on a i586 machine/*damn amd for making the k6-III i586, it really kicks ass, owell, tim to upgrad to athlon, but then agian, ChoasNETOS is for those who have a k6-III processor and want a system compiled and optimized for i585, probably not for everyone, maybe one other person owell, endplug
