comprable linux appz vs Microsoft

anyone have a listing, website, etc to show what apps for linux can be used to do the same things as appz on windows does?
ie-mozilla
photoshop-GIMP
etc etc..
anyone have a detailed list?
currently i'm dualbooting with xp/rh8 and I LOVE RH8.
got my sound working, tdk48/24/48burner, and printer.. going to buy a scanner that works for both.
i'm converted..just finding patience and trying to think outside the (ms) box

Well this is a pretty frequently asked question but it would be better to list software categories that you are interested in.

Internet Explorer - Mozilla, Opera, Netscape, Konqueror, Galeon, and many others

Microsoft Office - Open Office, KOffice, Star Office (not free), and I think Gnome has its own office suite as well.

Photoshop - GIMP (don't know of any others off hand)

Windows Media Player - XMMS, Real Player, mplayer, xine, xmovie, there are many others

Don't know about Money manage ment software, but I've heard Quicken works with Crossover Office.

outlook-xiaminan evolution.. lot better then outlook and doesnt "freeze" while checking mail if you are typing a letter at the same time..

There are some nice graphical tools for burning CDs but they are all just front-end GUIs for "cdrecord" or "cdrdao" (if you are making Video CDs etc). I actually prefer to do *all* of my burning from the command line.

"Kino" is a great app for capturing and editing video from your video camera (firewire) or TV card. "MPlayer", "Xine", and "Ogle" are great multimedia players for all media formats from the web and VCD/DVDs play.

Evolution is a nearly identical clone to Microsoft Outlook (without the viruses).

And just to let you know - Adobe Acrobat reader (pdf) is available for Linux - so it's it's own recommendation.

And Void main I must thank you for the ogle thing. I can now watch my DVDs of the first season of the Simpsons, and my Monty Python films and the series all work now, before I could only get Life of Brian to run under Xine. That is a nice little program.

I remember SuSe has a BSOD emulator (I'm serious. I think "emulation" even has it's own little menu group thingie. . .)

Yeah, just type "xscreensaver-demo" which will bring up a configuration. Select BSOD, click "Settings" and you have your choice of crash screens:
