I've been fiddling around with the Darwin inside my Mac, and while it's been fun, I keep wondering if some other version of UNIX / linux is more compatible with applications, or has more applications available to it.

For instance, I can't get GIMP to work. I've got Darwin / xFree86 / OroborOSX. Maybe if I used GNOME or KDE... (Well, there's no native KDE for Darwin yet, but that brings me back to the original question.)

In particular, I'm wondering about audio software. Having, a Mac, I'm used to being spoiled. There's lots of available audio software that runs great on the Mac. Are there any good audio editors and sequencers for *NIX systems?

http://www.linux-sound.org

http://www.hitsquad.com (look under Music Software, select a category, then select Linux)

There's a lot out there.  I haven't really had a chance to use any of it extensively.

linux or freebsd would probably be easyer to use as unix learning tool. darwin still needs a little help, and apsl isn't going to help. they need to change some of the terms of the apsl and make it free speech instead of like a book. you can say something someone else has said/*most of the time*/ but you can't copy a book.

though on darwin, keep playing with it. follow devolopers install instructions and write them well informed e-mail's of whats going on and that things arn't working. they should have a site for you to do that.
