i am going to get linux for the first time. what would be the best distro to start out with?

slack or debian for starting?? nah, i'd say redhat 8, that's what i'm using now and i like it

i was thinking about red hat but 5 isos will be murder on dialup. thanks for the suggestions. my cousin seems to have a lot of good things to say about red hat. i think i will wait till my next pay check and just buy the red hat cds.

Just buy a copy of Linux for Dummies. Comes with free RedHat 8 cd's, and is not a half bad book for settling in to Linux. That and the O'Rielley book will get you started right quick.

or you can probably buy red hat 8 much cheaper from a local mail order company than you would get it in the shops. it'll be minus the printed manuals and the 90 day user support, but will be roughly cost price.
