That's right. You Linux guys thought you were safe! Well, you shoulda known that there was some fight in us, and not just all talk. We've completed Stage 1 of development...

Locate a suitable Linux distribution. We've selected...

We'll be working with fury to get a first "dev release" out the door. This first version will be very simple, really. Komodo with GNUStep configured as its default UI. We plan to include a number of GNUStep apps with it as well.

It will be configured to replicate the OpenStep experience as closely as possible. Further down the line, it will be customized. GNUStep's graphics will be replaced by our own, and it will undergo numerous changes.

First, we hope to remove the current separation between WindowMaker and the rest of GNUStep apps. As it stands, GNUStep uses X11, and therefore, the apps require a standard X11 window manager. This would mean that the end user would be able to change their window manager. Unacceptable.

Rule one of user interface is consistency. Rule two is consistency. Rule three is consistency. By allowing the user to change WMs, then you've already broken rules 1-3. Customizability is NOT a goal of CthulOS. Basic personalization, yes. Color schemes, fonts, et cetera. Anything beyond that is of highly questionable value.

Our goal is to create a valuable, usable, free *Step that also embraces next-generation Linux technology.

It's that final requirement "next-generation Linux" that made us choose Komodo. fury's distro is coming along beautifully. The amount of simplification and friendliness that he's brought to Linux is astounding. Bundles, metadata, et cetera. He's got quite a few ideas going.

We'll be more than proud to say that CthulOS is "Powered by Komodo"!

The beauty of Linux is that there are many distros you can get, some designed like this one, and some that are not.  They'll both have their place.

Now... here's the question. Would there be anybody interested in helping with development? The next major stage... cleaning up Komodo and getting GNUStep running, then putting out an ISO will be a small operation, mainly just one guy, as he's nearly got this goal complete as it is.

We'd like a few people to run it for us before we put the "Developer Preview" up for public d/l. I can't test it very well, as I have no PC to run it on, only Virtual PC 6.

Once the DP is out, we're going to start work in earnest I hope on turning it into its own system. Any experienced devs would be welcome.

It's your chance to get in on the future!

I'd maybe like to run it on my computer, or maybe just at school (Windows 2000 gives frequent BSOD's on those PC's, so it will be an ultimate test   ).

Btw, your post did not contain "COME TO ERUDTION" or "THIS PLACE SUCKS". Would you like me to remove your troll status?

If the system requirements are low enough, I'll install it this weekend.

Otherwise, you'll have to wait a few more days so I can clear out some space on my work computer.

1st choice:
AMD K6 300MHz, 128 MB RAM, 4GB HD, NeoMagic 128 video w/ 2MB mem, ess1879 soundchip (mostly unsupported outside Win98)

2nd choice:
Intel 2GHz, 1.5 GB RAM, maybe 10GB space for new OS, ATI 9x00 w/ 128 MB mem, sound that works ok in Fedora

Do I qualify?

Not much news of late... more to come, though.

Our lead dev is working on adding a new C# API to Komodo. Both Komodo and CthulOS will support Qt via C++ (Granite API), and C# (Marble API). CthulOS will use GNUStep as its primary API and UI. Komodo will add GNUStep for Objective-C support. CthulOS will not ship with KDE, though. Nothing will stop you from installing it if you please, but it won't be included in the install.

It's because the server sometimes shuts down. When it's on again, the DNS server has it's old settings back (which are slow) and the server doesn't syncronise with NTP, which lets UBB think that you posted something before.
It's not the software, it's the internal clock of the server.

And btw, your signature isn't correct. HTML tags are not allowed, so remove

Hey.....

Why don't we write a C# API for OpenStep (based on GNUStep). If we did, I could hack up DotGNU's System.Windows.Forms.dll and give it multiple UI backends or something, then I could make a Qt one and a OpenStep one. This would be quite long termo f course but it wouild be fun.
