Hey, me again. Just figured out how to do a dual boot, cleanly.
So now I have Mandrake and windows xp(sorry!).
Now, when I had just Mandrake on, everything worked OK, but now, when I choose linux from LILO, it boots ok, but then goes to the black logon screen (with the penguin thingy) and the whole screen flashes. After a couple of mins, it stops flashing and says something about spawning too fast, trying again in 5mins
So....
I was able to logon as root, typed in startx and produced the following IO error/s
No screens found.
Fatal IO error 104 connection reset by peer on x server :0.0.
I then went onto the mandrakeexpert site, to which I found a problem that sounded uncanningly similar, the solution was to type depmod -a then reboot, which I did, but to no avail.
Any ideas?

It sounds to me like linux doesnt like your video card or monitor, or something to do with video.
Try running "setup" then go to "x configuration" and choose your video card and monitor.

It's been awhile, but once when I did a Mandrake install, I got the same thing. This seems to happen if you select 3-D support during the install. I seem to remember a warning that this was experimental and may cause problems. Since I had a nVIDIA GeForce2 vid card, I was able to get drivers from nVIDIA that cured the problem.

After that install, Winders nuked the 'Drake part, so for the next, and final, install, I didn't accept the 3-D support and had no problems with X. I'm not sure if this applies, but did you select that 3-D option? If so, can you get Linux drivers from whoever makes your vid card? How about ditching XP to see if this clears up the problem?
