Help my n00b @$$ choose another distro
« on: 12 October 2002, 16:18 »
Well, I liked Libranet, something seemed special about it. But with TWO double whammys, that obscure "improper shutdown" problem, and the wind0ze boot problem(sadly, 2.0 must lack a Lilo option), I've decided to something dreaded and hop distros again!

I don't like Mandrake, well it is probably fine, but I prefer something different. So far I can imagine SUSE and Lycoris desktop LX. Any other's you can think of?

I need:

-No nonsense dual booting
-Excellent out of the box speed(cuz it will be configured in it's default way for quite some time)
-No nonsense after-install stuff. So I should be able to boot right into KDE without any extra effort.
-Newbie friendly, but a GUI is a GUI, so I doubt there is much that can be done in this regard.

Unless Redhat 8.0 is vastly different, im not touching it! Slackware, isn't that susposed to be an advanced distro? Remember im one shutter short of a windoid.  ;)

Ex Elven great post. i would also suggest Red Hat 8. Thats what i use now and i have had very few problems. And the problems i have had are probraly caused by not all compatible hardware. So Red Hat 8 or maybe SuSE 8.1 i think is out now. that might be worth checking into.  SuSe 8 was very user friendly and i had no problems with it except internet. It is outdated now though so it does not have some nice features like easly changeing the screen resolution like Red Hat 8. So i really suggest Red Hat 8 for user friendly ness but SuSE 8.1 should also be given a try

I just had a bad experience with RH before.

-There is mountains and mountains and mountains of programs to choose to install.

-When I booted, it didn't automatically take me into the GUI, just let me at the horrible command line!

-Windows dual boot didn't work, but that may of been due to not using Lilo. Can't remember what I chose.

Damn, RH7.3 gave me a bad experience, i'd be amazed if RH8 magically became so easy.

This Lycoris looks pretty retard friendly, although it's power flower thang is soooo ghey. Anyone here used Lycoris before? Although if it's like Mandrake, being a little too un-optimized out of the box, then SuSe is probably a better choice.

Lycoris is meant to be easy and good. (although isn't it based around Libranet?). United Linux are meant to out up a good showing too.

Red Hat 8  has changed alot since Red Hat 7.3 in the GUI's aperance. Gnome and KDE look the same more or less and they dont put correct names for the software. Like Audio player instead of saying xmms. I also had bad experience with Red Hat when i was first starting but as new versions came out it has gotten evern easyer. and for it having to much stuff if you just select workstation as your install type and it should give you most everything you want and not all the server and programming stuff. it also has a nice menu feature that makes it easy to install the things you want on the cd that were on installed during the setup.it also has openoffice in the install so you get that( but i can't find it in my menus any where but hey thats just me)

That Lycoris just looks soooo friendly, it appears to put XP to shame in the "fischer price" aspect. How could something so retard looking be a bitch for a n00b? Lycoris, here I come!

I tried out Lycoris... well I thought I would try this RH8. You guys recomend it, and Redhat's website has a sweet looking preview. Im just so amazed that something as cryptic as RH 7.3 would magically become a serious Mandrake competitor in one major update.

A friend tried Lycoris... everything works right when when you boot it, but somehow it fucks up the multi boot record...

Well, I remember that Lycoris does not have the option to install Lilo. WTF is with these Linux vendors, they should not only warn about Grub problems with XP, they should offer Lilo to solve this problem. Remember there is alot of windoids who may be experimenting with Linux on their XP system.

Also, I thought there was quite a lack of extra software. On one hand I hate having to sift through endless rows of package selections, on the other hand, im not just going to Linux for a gaming system(more like I can hardly game with it). Who knows what shit I'll want to do, but I certaintly need easy to get at packages.

Hopefully RH8 allows Lilo, I can't remember how RH7.3 was. Damn, there was an incredible amount of people trying to snag RH8!

lazygamer, I'm not 100% sure if it's grub's fault XP doesn't work. Maybe it was just a coincidence.
