Need a little advice please?
« on: 16 May 2002, 02:26 »
Ok, I've been reading these forums for a while now and thanks to a lot of you guys I did some research on Linux and decided to go for it (Win2K is what I'm using now).
I hesitated for a long time because I'm not sure I will be able to set up my rig correctly, I'm not a techie but generally speaking I know what I'm doing with pc's, and I figured that I could always ask for help if I have to ...
Which brings me to my question, for the pc I'm building now (the one destined to have Suse as an OS) I have the choice between a Geforce3 and an Ati Radeon 8500.
So I'd like to know which one would be your primary choice and why, I know Nvidia has Linux support and I think Ati too but I can't decide on which one to use.
Could you please tell me your thoughts on the matter?

Thanks a lot.

Speaking in terms of support under X in Linux you can try this http://www.xfree86.org to see if both are supported under XFree86 4.* or 3.3.6. As far as gaming in Linux is concerned, I'm afraid I'm not an expert, sorry   ;)
[edit: i fixed your link]

either one is good ..... geforce 3 is a bit faster I believe, radeon has a bit better image quality.

If you're really a GPL/open source zealot you would go for ATI because their driver is open source and the NVIDIA driver isn't
If you can't learn to do something well, learn to enjoy doing it poorly.

Thanks for the replies, but I've gone through the forums @ linuxquestions and there are just a little too many users who have serious trouble with the newer Ati boards.
As I intend to be able to play Q3 under Linux as well I really wanna be sure that I have proper 3D support so I think I'll go for the Geforce3.
Thanks anyways.

I can only speak for the Geforce II. It works great with Linux.
Someone please remove this account. Thanks...
