what is UP with gdm???
« on: 23 February 2003, 08:26 »
i installed gnome 2.2 after a long dormancy of gnome interest in my head. I loved it after I got it to work (which took me a long time!) but i had to do an

xinit /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.gnome

because kde didnt show the gnome session and gdm was MESSED up. gdm has been messed up forEVER. when i first got slackware I tried both kde and gnome, kdm gdm and xdm. kdm was nice, had a bunch of cool features, gdm was cool but when i typed my user name it shook the screen and said incorrect user name and password, same with root but when I (and this still happens exactly the same) type a user name that doesnt exist, it asks for the password but then says incorrect user/password (obviously, the name doesnt exist!) what is UP with this???? ive looked thru the gdmconfig program, deleted my gdm.conf and ran gdmconfig, deleted gdm.conf and ran gdm without configuration and a bunch of other stuff. Nothing worked. It pisses me off because gdm's new graphical login is the most beautiful login period but i cant use it!!!!!!!!

the options in gdmconfig and the comments in gdm.conf say nothing about what I thought could cause this problem (not allowing certain users to log in etc)

oh also, when I set the gdmconfig auto login thing and wait the amount of time, the time counter just goes back to 30 and starts again. ie every five seconds gets lower, 10, 5, 0 then 30, 25, etc.

and the first time login thing does nothing. when i try to do the config option from the gdm login screen it says Enter root password: and i enter it but its in plain text and the wait thing applies so after 3 seconds (the default wait time) it says Incorrect user/password even if i hadnt pressed enter yet. plus when i do press enter i guess it thinks it was a user name so it asks for a password and it is masked (because their is no user name for my root password :-\)

i am using the slackware current package, ive reinstalled it several times and i truly do not think they would let something dumb like this stay in their gnome builds all the way from gnome 1.4 to 2.2. GOD this is annoying. Anybody have any suggestions/stupidities??
