Webmaster: Wondering why we don't link to Caldera OpenLinux and Caldera DR-DOS like we used to? Read on.

From: Richard Rife
Subject: Caldera Links on Web Site
Date: Thu, 20 Jul 2000 11:38:32 -0600

Dear Sir or Madam:

I understand that you may be involved in the creation and maintenance of a web site having the domain name "fuckmicrosoft.com."

On that web site, there is a link to Caldera OpenLinux and to Caldera DR-DOS.

On behalf of Caldera Systems, Inc., I request that all links to Caldera or Caldera Systems and any Caldera System's products be deleted from the above web site. Today I will also send you a formal letter demanding removal of the Caldera name and links from the web site.

I expect that you will comply with this request in a timely manner. If not, we will pursue legal action available to us to enforce this demand.

Thank you for your consideration of this matter.

Sincerely,
Richard Rife
Vice President & General Counsel
Caldera Systems, Inc.

Response (sent directly to Caldera):
While I remain unconvinced that you have any legal ground to stand on in making this demand, I have neither sufficient time, patience, or interest in Caldera and/or its products to put forth any effort to defend having a link to your site. I merely had the link there to offer users an alternative to Microsoft products. Woe be unto me for being foolish enough to think you might actually appreciate picking up a little extra traffic from a group of users who are already predisposed to being interested in switching from Microsoft to another platform -- perhaps your own. Given that on today's Slashdot, CmdrTaco says of Caldera and SCO, "I don't know which company I consider less relevant," one would think when the attention is needed, you'd be grateful.

Nonetheless, the bastard child subset of the otherwise occasionally useful legal profession -- a subset that's made up of self-aggrandizing, hollow-man legalese-spouting, overpaid, and mentally under-challenged hacks who foolishy view the Internet and related industries as their next unguarded Fort Knox; who have the temerity to unabashedly suggest that a link to a site is tantamount to trespassing and burglarizing the physical premises of a company -- this sad subset of an otherwise noble profession has had its way today.

So rally the troops and make the big announcement while you sip champagne and partake of fine Belgian chocolates in the executive conference room, with all the staff gathered around for this auspicious occasion. Why? Because the links have been removed! Caldera's corporate integrity shall continue to be untarnished! The menacing spectre of world domination by the Microsoft Eradication Society has been eliminated, for the litigious parasite division of Universitatis Calderensis have bested yet another foe!

(In everyday parlance, you win; the links are gone.)

And I trust I'll be hearing from you about the SCO link when and if this purchase goes through?

Their response:
Thank you very much for removing the link.

Best regards,
Richard Rife

OMG! Of all the stupid things a company can do. How can you be mentally competent enough to program LINUX, yet not want your link on this site. It even gets worse when you consider that the only real difference is that people have to use a search engine to find the link, rather then just directly clicking it. Perhaps these companies should sue some search engines?

I would love to see this be an "oversight" by a stupid company member who gets canned because he was a retard. Then MES gets a letter of apology and asks to be re-instated on the links page. Sadly I doubt that would happen.  :(

Give him a break.  He was a VP, and we all know in order to become a VP you have to have had the full frontal.  BTW, Corel sucks anyway.  Go with RedHat, Debian, Mandrake, or a Mac.
Someone please remove this account. Thanks...

I actually ditched Mandrake for Slackware. Whatever.
