How Do you Dual Boot????

I'm having a problem connecting to the internet with Mandrake 9.0.  I don't have any problems connecting with Mandrake 8.2.

What I want to do is switch between Mandrake 9.0 and Mandrake 8.2 so I can try to find the problem.

When my computer boots up, what do I do so that I can choose between Mandrake 9.0 and 8.2?

Wouldn't you rather just fix your internet connection? How do you connect to the internet? Modem/dialup? DSL? Cable? Do you have your firewall turned on and possibly configured incorrectly?

If you could describe in detail your problem maybe we can help find a solution. Also if you could list the type of equipment you use to connect to the internet (modem type/model, ethernet card model if applicable, etc) that could certainly be helpful.

I would rather fix my Internet connection but I
haven't had any success getting my Internet connection to work. The way that I connect to the Internet is through a router which is connected to a cable modem (SURFboard SB4100 Cable Modem). I am not aware of a firewall that is turned on. The router I have (a Cable/DSL Broadband Router with 4-port 10/100 Mbps Switch made by CompUSA) says that there is a firewall located in the router that blocks your Intranet to all unwanted packets from outside intruders.

The problem with Mandrake 9.0 is that I am unable to connect to my router and therefore the Internet. When I install Mandrake 8.2 I have no problem configuring the network connection so that I can connect to the Internet. When I install Mandrake 9.0 I follow the same steps but I'm unable to connect.

These are the steps that I follow when I install the network settings. I have the install auto detect my settings. The install finds a lan connection, I tell the install to use this connection. It also finds my ethernet card. It asks if I have another ethernet card, I say no. It asks me to enter a IP address or automatically get a IP, I choose auto which is bootp/dhcp. It asks for the host name and I leave it blank. It asks for an HTTP proxy or a FTP proxy and I leave this blank too. These are the same steps that I follow to configure the Internet for Mandrake 8.2 which is able to connect.

The ethernet card that I have is a Raltek
Semiconductor, Model: RTL-8139, Kernel Module:
rtl8139, Bus Type: PCI.

When Mandrake 9.0 is finished the installation I go to the Mandrake Control Center to try to configure the network settings to get it to work. If I use DHCP and try to activate the ethernet card with ifup eth0 I'm not able to get it activated. If I change the settings to a static IP address I am able activate the ethernet card. When I ping the static IP address, the packets are sent. However if I try to Ping the router none of the packets are sent.

When I said firewall, I meant the firewall that is included with Mandrake. I have seen others mention that this has caused them similar problems. I would turn off Mandrake's firewall as a test, as it might be blocking DHCP packets. That would explain why if you set it up with a static address you had some success with ping. Here is a thread on the Mandrake forum that might help as a couple of people seem to have the same problem as you:

If this does not help, let me know and we can go through some step by step trouble-shooting. Also, hopefully some others here that use Mandrake (I don't) will be able to help you.

I don't have Mandrake's Firewall installed.  


I'm still trying to fix the problem but I havent' had any suscess.  Anybody have any ideas?

When I do a /etc/init.d/network start as root this is what I get:

Setting Newwork parameters:  [OK]
Bringing up loopback interface:  [OK]
Bringing up interface eth0:  Determining IP information for eth0.... failed   [FAILED]

If I set up my IP Manually I'm able to ping the IP address that I created but I'm not able to ping my router.

Hey, this happened to me before, the card would not activate because the cable modem retained the previous IP in memory.

Anyhow, if you haven't done it, turn the cable modem off for a couple minutes, then try again.
