SAMBA and SWAT don't love me... :(
« on: 9 August 2002, 11:17 »
OK... accually.. they did love me.. I had SAMBA configed nicely.. was using SWAT to do it.. got it so my win98 machine could access my Linux drive.. and theoretically vice-versa...  than... something got strange.... nmbd(some random browsing daemon for SAMBA) stopped working.. and I couldn't get it back up.... than being to used to windows I rebooted.... and than I stopped being able to access SWAT anymore... it just simply... won't load it... since you access SWAT by going to port 901 on your machine (ie: 127.0.0.1:901 in your browser)

It' strange... I just can't seem to get into SWAT... and it's starting to annoy me... it simply load a blank HTML page.. I uninstalled and reinstalled SAMBA(which included SWAT) seeing that as an easy fix.. but to no avail... so.. Now I'm confused... so.. I'll ask you all if you can help me out.. thanks anyway if ya can't

Nevermind..

I had my computer set to be Rrakanychan instead of localhost.. and..well..... the swat.conf file said to only let localhost access it.. so.. I win in the end!

ok, You know in winblows you go to my network places and you can browse through other comps and such? ok.. I can browse my Linux box from winblows.. but how do I browse winblows from Linux? and/or how would I go about opening a file on my linux box that is on my winblows machine.. (ie. MP3s on drive E)

ok...nmbd died... It just won't start up at all...

ok.. again.. ignore me.... just had to run it as nmbd -i so I could see all the messages.... and not as a deamon... nmbd -D needed to tweak my SMB.conf file.. I'm an idiot.. don't tweak the interfaces unless you know what you are doing..hehe

Well, Konquerer can do this. IIRC, you type smb://Machine_name in the address bar (in the file manager), and you're set. You should also be able to scan the network for Samba-PC's and then just click on the name to browse it, but I never got that working myself.

You can also use smbclient, which is a part of the samba package. It's text-based though, and somewhat resembles a simple FTP client. See the man page for info about smbclient.

DC is correct for directly connecting to a machine but if you truly want to browse you will also need to get lisa/reslisa configured properly.  You can also use "smbmnt/smbmount" to mount a share from a windows box to a directory on your linux box (much like NFS for any other UNIX system).
Someone please remove this account. Thanks...
