It's not that insulting to be called a noob, everyone is at one stage.  Depends on whether they mean insult by it I guess...

The md5sum is for checking the isos were downloaded correctly.  I've never done the md5check thing, I expect you'll have to get a (small) utility off the web to check the md5 against the CD.

Basically once you've checked the CD's or decided that they're probably ok anyway you burn them onto a CD.  You have to make sure that the iso gets burnt to the CD properly, (there should NOT be a single ".iso" file on the CD) and also make sure the CD is bootable.  Then you read a little on installation (especially partititioning,) back up your data, pop CD1 in your PC then reboot.  It *should* automatticaly start the installer and ask you questions as it goes on what to do.

www.linuxiso.org has a few howtos on MD5 checking and iso burning if I remember correctly...
Yesterday it worked
Today it is not working
Windows is like that

lol. now that thats out of the way, a noob is just short for a newbie, or someone who is new, whether its new to linux, the forums, or driving, whatever.
If you are new to something, you are a noob.

well, not just new to something. I could take up a new programming language, say perl. after an hour of a little studying i would know plenty about it. i wouldnt call myself a newbie just because i'm still new to it. if you sat down at a computer and were able to work with them better than an average person, i wouldnt call you a noob/newbie.
