So Redhat 8 is now on my system

RH8 looks really promising. The GUI blew me away, the load times(sadly I can't find my stopwatch) appear excellent compared to previous distros I've tried(and the load times may be reduceable even further if I knew anything about tweaking). Redhat also has an excellent package install system, I can actually choose what I want very easily. Although Mandrake is still the best for combining variety and ease of selection.

Can you believe that Redhat 8 still won't properly boot into XP, even with Lilo! Hmmmm, what to do? Well, I either tweak something in Redhat, use a 3rd party bootloader, or retrofit Windows XP's bootloader to allow a Linux option. I say retrofit XP's loader. Ok it's heretical, but it's better then having to manually switch the boot drive in the bios(a fate that would kill all Linux ambitions). Actually, is it even possible to do this? Windows can't read Linux partitions, so could the bootloader be able to find it's way to a Linux partition? Perhaps Zombie can help me...

Other then this pressing boot issue, I have a few questions.

1)What would I have to install to get C programming capability and an IDE in Linux? I don't want hordes and hordes or libraries, all I want is something that allows me to use all the commands in my C for Dummies book(you see im a dummy and...) I was experimenting with the Allergo C compiler and IDE in Windows, and now I want something that I can continue learning C in Linux.

2)Any way to override Redhat's insistence on me having a root password of 6 characters? I am not connected to the internet, I won't be connected with Linux for quite sometime. I do not need shit for security. A one letter root password is all I need to warn me that im entering an area that could screw my system up.

This is all for now...

1) On the menu "System Settings->Packages", under "Development" select "Development Tools". If something requires the kernel source to be installed you'll also need the "Kernel Development". If you are trying to compile a KDE app you'll also need the "X Software Development" and "KDE Software Development" installed. But just "Development Tools" will get you the compiler and everything needed for basic apps.

2) Use a password of more than 6 chars at install, and after you log in for the first time do a "su -" and enter the long password you used, then type "passwd" which will prompt you for a new root password. Type in any password you like as short as you like, it will warn you that it's too short but retype it anyway, it will take it.
Someone please remove this account. Thanks...

Well I have had a sad thing happen, see my thread in the Windows section.

Interestingly enough, I can already boot between XP and Linux simply by switching the bios boot target. I guess XP creates it's own personal boot image, and Linux just puts it in the MBR... or perhaps just on it's own drive?

I store Linux on a totally seperate harddrive.

Ok trying to understand this, would installing Redhat with a clean MBR possibly allow it to dual boot properly?
