Simple modem question - help mucho appreciated
« on: 2 January 2003, 19:12 »
hello.
simple question, please help, and in the next hour or so if poss.

i have just had 2 PCI modems in a row not be able to work with linux. I am about to buy this modem if i can convince myself it will work. Will it? it connects to the computer via a nine pin serial port which is what i have, and the snag is that the seller claims windows is required.

Can i just put this in the plug in the back of the computer and then point kppp to the correct block device file for that serial port?

Sorry to sound dim, but after two modem irritations i am not going to waste my time again.

In short: Will literally any serial port modem work in linux? Thanks very very much in advance.

Okay at short notice I found this.

modem help UK

Which after scrolling down (the link jump is not so acurate) gives Linux links however it is more the promise of rather than actual links.

The manufacturer just offers dead pages when linux FAQ is requested.

I think it would be possible, given the age, but you might also be in for a tough ride. And I am certainly no Guru here.

As far as I am aware pointing KPPP at the correct TTY locatation is the prefered method (don't know off the top of my head). There was a guy on the board a little while ago who was having trouble with a PCI modem. He got the problem fixed.

Just found this MES posting

Since I started messing around with Linux, I've been using the same modem - a US Robotics Sportster 56k external; it's connected for Mandrake, Debian, Libranet, Corel, BeOS 5.0, and Win 95&98; if you can find one, I'd suggest it as the best choice.  They're pretty common.
I'm SERIOUS about Linux; are you??
