Lilo problems
« on: 23 October 2003, 13:14 »
I've been attempting a Knoppix remaster but I needed more swap space. I was also trying out a new distro so I reformatted the whole ext3 partition with Mandrake on it using partitionmagic 8.
Stupid me.
I used LILO as the boot loader but now that Mandrake is gone so is LILO. When I boot in, the usual stuff that PhoenixBIOS shows still shows, but when it attempts to start LILO (as it used to) the screens shows this:

quote:
L 99  99  99  99  99  99

More 99 appeared every 2 seconds. I walked away and came back then the whole screen was filled with 99. Is there any way to set Windows to boot first? I have Knoppix, if that is any help.

ummm.... hmmm... well if install linux again then you will have the bootloader back and will be able to boot both. Windows does not come with anything to get itself to boot if you use your own bootloader and delete it.

So you can install some sort of linux in the same place and make sure to install the boot loader at the beginn of the drive Master Boot Sector or something (is that whats its called?) and then add the windows in the lilo.conf.

OR if you didnt want linux anymore you wouldh ave to reinstall windows because it doesnt come with any bootloader of its own that you can use.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I've just read on justlinux that windows can fix the master boot record or something but details were not told. The thing is, I can't even boot in anything (save Knoppix) How do I create a bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com with Knoppix? Any applications that do so?

there are program on the windows cds to fix the boot loader, but it wont help u with ur linux boot loader. fixmbr or something like that in the windows recovery console. You could try booting into linux via a boot disk or some alternative (like the redhat "linux rescue" option) and running lilo should fix it. I use grub myself, which is easy (grub-install /dev/hda)... might want to read the manpages for lilo... or reinstall your distribution.
