Debian, a hackers playground?

why is it that everyone claims that debian is a hackers palyground. What in Debian can i do to hack, that i cant do in red hat?

I think you're using the wrong definition of "hack" there. What they really mean is that Deb is the programmer's distro. Unlike the more commercialized distros (Mandrake, Red Hat, SuSE) Deb doesn't have any corporate backing. The development depends upon voluntary cooperation. A lot like how Linux got started in the first place. Deb is definitely the GPL purist's distro.
