WOW!!!!

After much testing with RH 8.0 I've made up my mind, I will switch from SuSE to RH!!!  

To be absolutely sure about everything, on my test box I wiped the HDD clean, added a second one and installed Win2K on the master drive.
Next I installed RH, tested the dual boot to see if I could boot both Win2K and RH, no probs except for the LILO bootloader to be butt ugly.
So far so good!

Then I borrowed VMWare 3.2 from a friend of mine to see if I could get it to work.
Weel, it worked like a charm, I'm installing a Win98 VM now  
So VMWare is a winner, I'm gonna order it, I'm hooked.

What I wonder about is, I've seen "add hardware" options in both Mandrake and SuSE but not in RH, is there an easy way to get new hardware recognized in RH?
I looked for it on their website but found nothing really satisfactory?!

Now, all I gotta do is wipe my SuSE partition and install RH on my main machine.
I just hope it's gonna be as smooth as on my test box ...
I replicated an almost identical config, so it should work, shouldn't it?

And btw, void main, what do you think about SuSE now that you had time to play with it?

Hmmmm, every time I shut down my virtual machine I get a VMWare Panic wit a lot of errors behind    :confused:  
And then I have to re-install the guest-OS.
It was also a little sluggish on my PII 400      
Bah, I'll givbe it another go when I install RH on my main machine (P4 1.8), should run a little faster at the least.

Edit : I just had the VMWare panic again, something about AIO not installed, but didn't have to re-install the guest OS anymore, I could reboot in Win98 no probs.
What is AIO, THAT'S THE QUESTION!

Ever since upgrading to RH8.0 (which I also upgraded VMware at the same time) I get a VMware error after shutting down the guest OS and closing the VMware window. But it doesn't do any damage to my guest OS.  

I find after a new RH upgrade it takes VMware a little time to get all the bugs out and eventually they will have a VMware (usually not *too* long) that has no errors with the new release of RH. I doubt that they would claim to support RH8 on their site just yet, but I've been using it since the day RH8 came out with only that little annoying error when closing the VMware window.

The thing is, I might not upgrade to VMware 4.0 when it comes out. I *rarely* run my Windows VMware session any more. Ever since installing RH8 I have fully converted the rest of my family over to RH with no problems. They really have OpenOffice working well and my duaghter has no problems using it. Now that I have video/capturing capabilities I don't have to reboot for that. I only have one program that requires Windows and I'm selling it ($300 sim).

I just installed "apt" for RPM (Debian's package manager) and I've installed several things today with it and everything went slick as a whistle. Any dependencies were downloaded and installed along with the target app. If you haven't checked into it you might want to. The first thing you might want to install with it is "mplayer":

# apt-get install mplayer
# apt-get install mplayer-skins

which will download/install mplayer, gmplayer, mencoder, and all the skins just like if you were on a Debian box (apt does kick butt).

RH has its little kudzu program which automatically recognizes new hardware on boot.  Will that work for you

You can get rid of that ugly graphical lilo screen too by respecifying message.

I have trouble installing RH8 or Drake9 in VMWare or VPC (Win or Mac version). It gets up to the packet installing parts and slows down like molasses in winter.

Oh well. Drake 9 is awesome, I haven't had a chance to play with RH 8 much. When I get my shiny new server you can bet your $$ that some version RH is going on it. As long as my onboard NIC has no problems with it

I found the answer to the "AIO NOT_DEFINED" problem. Go to VMware's news server. The answer is there:

I haven't fixed mine yet but I see there is a fix.

Here's the AIO fix that worked perfectly for me:

ftp://platan.vc.cvut.cz/pub/vmware/vmware-any-any-update20.tar.gz,
untargz it, and run runme.pl included in the package as root. It should take care of all your troubles.

Thanks a lot void main, I checked the VMWare site (not the news server) but found no reference at all to the "AIO not defined" problem.
I'll download that patch when I get back from work today.

Also, I installed Quake 2 on my Win98 guest OS in VMWAre and ran it in 800*600 full screen, it was ugly and kinda slow because it ran in software mode but it was playable

Yeah, the VMware news server is exponentially more helpful than their web site. If you have an issue with VMware, chances are it'll be on the news server and there will be a solution.

As far as your Quake under VMware thing, I would personally not run it in VMware. I run that stuff native. Graphics intensive Games under Windows under VMware are not really what VMware was designed for, although like you said they may play. It's *perfect* for running things like Office, Image editing, database, etc.

Okay, but I wanted to see if Quake would actually run  
The whole Win2K/RH dual boot and installing Win98 in a VMWare session was purely for testing purposes anyway, it would be kinda pointless to install Win98 in VMWare while I have a more functional Windows (Win2K) already on another drive.
BUT, now I also know that VMWare is not gonna take care of the "gaming problem", as long as I can't get the games running in Linux perfectly I will need a Windows partition or leave the games behind.
I found that since I began tinkering with Linux I play a lot less anyway, but it feels good to play a Clanwar or a few duels every few days and frag the hell out of your opponents

Ah, yeah if you use Windows for games only then VMware would not help you out much. I don't play games in Windows so.. But I do things like install Win2k Advanced Server with MS SQL Server and Exchange Server in VMware sessions. And I use it for other operating systems like Solaris and BSD. Works great for testing network interoperability between OSs without ever having to reboot. But of course you need a healthy system if you want to run all that stuff at the same time.

Cool!! Problem solved, no error message anymore.
Thanks again void main, now I'm gonna try to install those OpenGL drivers in VMWAre and try to get Quake 3 to run

Now why would you want to do that when you can run Quake III natively on Linux better?

I know, I already run it on the machine I'm currently typing on.
I just want to push the envelope, see how far VMWare can go        
And ultimately, if I can make it run it means that I can run Serious Sam, AVP2 and all the otther games as well.
I know you told me that VMWare would not be the answer for me ifg I only used Windows for games but I very much would like to delete the Windows partition from my IBM Deskstar 40GB and make better use of it
