Bigger Pain: Windows or FC2?
« on: 7 July 2004, 00:36 »
There is a nice article written by Ken Barber on his efforts to get FC2 running right.

An interesting sidebar was in the article:

Everything is relative

Getting FC2 to a state of usability in a home or office environment requires a great deal more labor than I believe should be required. However, my complaints were put into perspective last week when I visited a classroom to start getting it ready for summer term. I walked in on a cursing, overworked desktop support tech who was griping loudly about the inordinate time it takes to install and patch Windows on a roomful of computers -- in an organization that will not pay for disk imaging software or an in-house Windows Update server. "You don't need Microsoft Office installed on these, I hope?" he asked through a fog of sweat and frustration. I acknowledged that I did not. Then he wanted to know if I needed HP printer drivers installed, with a cynical groan about how it would "only take a few more hours."

I used to supervise people who support Windows on the desktop. I had forgotten how bad Windows really is. Suddenly my gripes about Fedora seemed petty.

In brightest day, in darkest night, no evil shall escape my sight....

I dislike distro's that include only 100% Open-Source solutions. You're going to need Flash for instance to watch the everyday happenings of weebl (and sometimes weebl's friend bob) or any other Flash using website.
Not including these "required" software takes a load off the user-friendly rate of an operating system.

That's what GNU is all about!
...and those who want flash, mp3, DVD,... can use APT...
This aien't difficult at all.

Sauron:
Windows doesn't give you flash out of the box...

and it is not as if anyone if denying people choice here. SuSE, Linspire, Mandrake, Libranet et al all come with flash, java and all that chuff. People like RedHat and to a greater extent the Debian guys have always been dedicated to being completely free, and as such other solutions exist on the market for those who aren't interested in this stance.
ie Joe Average user.
My point is, who cares.
Contains scenes of mild peril.

No-one is arguing that. The reasons for using free over proprietary software are primarily political/ethical, not necessarily practical.

Allot of that stuff you have mentioned does come out of the box.  Stuff like Mp3's and DVD support would not due to copywrites and stuff.  Pluse those things that do not come out of the box in linux doesn't for windows eather
