If you mean free as in warez, you're an idiot who doesn't know what piracy does to the software industry. We don't hand out warez here.

Your question is actually a FAQ item on http://www.lindows.com/

quote:

Question
Can I get a free copy of LindowsOS?

Answer
We don't currently offer any programs that provide LindowsOS for free.

We do, however, offer  the following ways for getting LindowsOS:

Order a "certified computer" with LindowsOS preinstalled from one of our "builder" partners, such as those currently being offered through Wal-Mart. You'd receive a computer with LindowsOS preinstalled as soon as your order could be placed, processed, and shipped. (Not free, but included at a great price.)

Become a Lindows Insider where, among other benefits, you'll be able to immediately download the current version of LindowsOS, as well as receive the LindowsOS "General Release" when it's ready later this year. (Not free, but comes with a money-back guarantee to ensure your satisfaction.)

Wait for the LindowsOS General Release later this year.

And as such, it puts them with the likes of M$.  Distributing free code from others at a price and I would be willing to bet that they have no plans of sharing the profits with the programmers.  They are within their rights to do that, but I am within my rights not to use it.  And I certainly would not suggest pirating it for a couple of reasons. Pirating is what made M$ a monopoly.  Just because it costs doesn't mean it's better.  From everything I've heard it is the worst Linux distro available.  Get a real distro.

that would be the insiders, they get a free beta version to test out. I, like VoidMain, dont suggest you try to get Lindows. I suggest getting Mandrake or Red Hat Linux.

As far as Lindows goes, stay away from it; it encourages internet browsing as "Root"; that's a huge no-no, it leaves your entire file system open to intrusive, nosy assholes like XP user# whateverthefuck.  If ou want to try an easy to install, free Debian-based distro, Libranet 2.0 is avalable for download at http://www.libranet.com
It's "Woody" based, with a 2.4.16 kernel, and lots of nice little extras.

[EDIT: Do not reply to his posts it is what drives him]

If you can A. follow instructions and B. install Windows, you can install Libranet with no problem.
I'm not sure about the download edition, but the purchased edition allows you to install WINE during setup; if the D/L edition can't do that, then just apt-get install WINE, and it will be downloaded, configured and install from Debians website.

yep, a lot of these guys say Debian is one of the best these days. For a while a lot of people said SuSE, and my favourite is mandrake (though i haven't tried suse or debian). You'll find a lot of people tell you to get red hat too, which is a very mainstream distro (so you will find fixes and so on for it that tad easier).

Yes he is.  Pirating is one of the reasons M$ is a monopoly today. I can explain if you like, but I have explained it several times previously.  You might want to check some of the older threads...

While the distribution of Microsoft (and non-Free in general) software, unauthorised or otherwise, is ultimately a bad thing, I don't believe (though I could be mistaken) that this is the point he was making. And it's unfortunate that he used the propaganda term "piracy."

I see. I think I sort of agree with you. Is the term warez appropriate? I believe it is. But he didn't know that the original poster was looking for a legit beta version. And the original poster didn't know that that program is no longer available for free. Lindows contains a lot of non free/Free code along side of a lot of free/Free code, which is doubly bad in my opinion. They are putting proprietary icing on the open source cake and making a profit of which none of the open source cake makers are seeing any cut from. Now the writers of the open source code didn't ask for a cut but I have to believe that most of them would see it as a slap in the face. And the type of users that would use this would just think that Lindows wrote the entire thing. And to top it off, it's a crappy product. How can you put something out that defies the most basic security rules?  No thanks...

Of course maybe I am still misunderstanding the intent of his post... I'm not the sharpest tack in the box...
