AC97 audio internet sharing on mandrake 8.2
« on: 22 June 2002, 07:00 »
these are the last two problems i'm having. How
dou you configure the sound? i used to use
something like ./sndconfig or something on red hat
but that doesn't work. As for the internet sharing
i ran the wizard in the contol centre, but my
windoze machine can't use the internet. Is there
sort of special configuration i need to do on it?
(i.e like proxie?)
-thanks

if i understand a little bit of what you are saying. to get your windoze machine to connect, you must run 'winipcfg' and make the IP of your internet machine the default gateway.

try running 'sndconfig' (no './') to configure your sound.

Sharing is up and running!! Thanks a lot. When i
try to run sndconfig it says "command not found"
Do i need administrator access to run it?

su - -c "/sbin/sndconfig"

Ooops, didn't notice you were running Mandrake.  It's /sbin/sndconfig in RedHat.  Type "locate sndconfig | grep bin" and if you have it installed then it should show you where.  Mandrake might have a different command, don't remember. Hopefully a Mandrake user here can help. Sorry about that..

Have you looked at the Mandrake documentation?  I just looked in the 8.2 manual on Mandrake's web site and it looks to me like you can configure your sound card in harddrake...  But like I said, I don't use Mandrake.  You can read the manual or wait for someone here to help.  They surely will sooner or later.

well sorry to point out the obvious, but when i couldn't get my sound to work, VoidMain suggested running "kmix" and turning all the volumes up! this worked a treat!

try that! (just type "kmix" at a prompt) of course if it doesn't work, then it's back to configuring et c... there's a thread in this forum a few weeks back where i jump through a few hoops trying to get my sound to work, maybe you should go and search for "sound" in the unix forums, and see if you can come up with anything...

If i am right the AC97 is an on-board sound thingy. I am haveing similar problemson a computer i have been setting mandrake 8.2 up on at work. It has a Jetway M/B and the linux drivers are on its CD-ROM.
But you need to compile them and then load the modules. I have not done this yet, but will be doing tomorrow, so we'lll see what happens....
