Sound problems

I'm running Mandrake 9.2 and I can't seem to get my Volume to go up.. I mean I can hear that the sound is working because when I put my ear right next to the speaker I can hear it. But other than that it won't go any louder...

First, turn off all sound sevices.
Now run alsaconf (as root).
...aumix and kmix are for tweaking.
