why does mplayer have to hate me so much?!
« on: 12 December 2002, 06:25 »
ok, so i've been trying to get real audio support working in mplayer, but each time i try to use it, it crashes, giveing me different error messages each time!

so, if anyone could help me out, i'd really appreciate it. and if you need any information other then what i posted, just ask.
Dr kelso; Didn't you get my memo about looking professional, and whereing your lab coat at all times?

Dr. Cox; well you know what? i did...and i threw it away. But then i didn't feel like that was a strong enough gesture so i erected a life like figure of you out of straw, put my lab coat on it, put your memo in the pocket, and invited all the local neighborhood children to light it on fire and beat it with sticks!

heard it on Scrubs, quite possibly the funniest show on tv

You probably forgot to feed mplayer. Maybe you should post the error messages?

(note; i'm using the gui to do this)

i'd imagine that i'm supposed to use the "play url" option. if i'm wrong, that's probably my entire problem. anyway...

i either get "couldn't resolve url" (trying to play the same file works just fine on my brother's mac, using realone that is.), or that it isn't in a supported format. but after i reconfigured mplayer for real audio, real was listed as an enabled codec.

oh, and tell me how to feed it.

-thanks

Why not just use the Linux Real Player?

I would have said the same two months ago.  But at about that time, I concluded that Real too, is run by the Nazis (DRM).  Mplayer is open-source, and plays about everything.  MPlayer rox04 (forgive me, I'm still quite a newbie at h4XoR speech)!  Once you get it working.

OK, distortion, give us the URL of the file you are trying to listen to.  Also tell us the errors that you are getting.  Did you include the real codecs?  Did you use the option to point them out when you used ./configure

EG:
./configure --enable-vorbis --with-reallibdir=/home/distortion/mplayer/rpCodecs

or whichever dir the codecs are in?

Why not just use Xine?  It runs just about all video formats, and it is availible through apt (which will solve all dependency problems.)

First, if you are using Red Hat or SuSE, or anything else that supposrts RPMs (I don't know if Mandrake is supported yet) you will need to read this, as posted by the main-man himself:

http://forum.fuckmicrosoft.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=5&t=001077

To get it running, once it is installed, read this:

http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/apt-howto/index.en.html

After that, it is just a matter of typing two things: "apt-get update" and then "apt-get install xine-ui"

lorKorub, i'm running slackware, which doesn't have apt-get,and doesn't like rpms too much.

currently, it tells me that whatever file i open is in an unsupported format. more specifically "========= Sorry, this file format is not recognized/supported ============ === if this file is an avi, asf, mpeg stream, please contact the author! ==="i'll try the same files on another machine, and it will work fine. but if you are looking for one in particular: http://www.pureacidmixtapes.com/sound/ram/may-energy.ram

and yeah, i used the --with-reallibdidr switch, and it said at the end of the configuration script that support for real had been included...

thanks, i really appreciate you guys helping me.

Did you download the win32 codecs from MPlayer HQ? And did you stick them in the directory where MPlayer looks for them?

/usr/lib or /usr/lib/win32? Also the link you posted to that *.ram file does not seem to be valid. Please post a link so I am make sure it works on my machine as well.

Yeah, it's not playing for me either, when I download the *.rm file and try and run it locally through MPlayer it tells me:

Requested audio codec family [racook] (afm=realaud) not available (enable it at
compilation!)

But the codec definitions are in my codec.conf file. It appears the binary version that I downloaded was not compiled with realaud support.

Now it plays fine under RealPlayer for Linux of course which is what I have always used for Real content. Any specific reason you don't want to install RealPlayer?

Well, unfortunately I can't help you with that since you are running Slackware (It's been 7 or 8 years since I used Slackware). RealPlayer works perfectly on Red Hat. Maybe some of the other Slackers here can help you get RP installed and running.
