should i use red hat 7.2???
« on: 12 September 2003, 21:17 »
that's all i got. i recieved a free disk from one of my computer classes, and i don't know much about it.  is it good? have any of you used it before?  i would like to download something newer from the internet, but unfortunantly i haven't the bandwidth to download large files.  i am running winMe right now and, of course, hate it.  i want something that is not micro-controlled, but that i can still get onto the net and do word processing, edit pictures, and play games.  so, is rh7.2 a viable option or not?

Yeah, its better than winMe for sure.  You could probably get you hands on a later redhat CD at a low cost or get someone to make you one though.  Linux has come a long way since the days of RH7.2.

u'd be able to all that with RH.  but as for playing games, that would depend on what u r gonna play.  i, like most, would suggest duel booting to start with and transfering to linux at ur own pace.  u won;t regret it!  :D

redhat 7.2 and 7.3 are still a standard for businesses, and schools.

7.2 is said to still be one of the best distro's ever made

I used to run 7.3, and I loved it, everything that it came with worked great, my best friend is a Networking student at a university up hear (UCFV)
and he still swears by 7.2 for networking, he uses SuSE for other stuff, but that's just a prefrence, I'm not saying he uses SuSE because RH sucks.

and besides the nice thing about Linux is that you can basically turn REDHAT 7.2 into something that runs like RedHat 9

just download the latest Kernel and compile it and then get the latest KDE and Gnome, along with an update of the programs you use most often

Your really going to enjoy RedHat, and Linux in general!

I agree with Commander and suselinux entirely.  RH 7.2 is a great distrobution and is very standard still for most of the businesses I have worked with.  Its also a very workable desktop.  But laterversions, 8.0 and 9.0 are more desktop oriented that 7.2 is.  You will still be able to "get onto the net and do word processing, edit pictures, and play games" with RH 7.2.  But, KDE 3.1 is cool, and comes with 9.0.  It is possible (though takes a long time without broadband) to use redhats apt-get (the first thing you should install on any red hat) to upgrade 7.2 to a more recent version.

personally i feel getting a later version might be good...  7.2 is alright (for red hat :)  ) but 8.0 / 9.0 are much nicer.  (IMO)
Yesterday it worked
Today it is not working
Windows is like that

You could probbably go to your local book store and by a book about Redhat 9.0 with a copy of RedHat 9.0

Also, I can't exactly think of the site right now, but there is a site where you can buy a copy for about $5.00.

Here is a site where you can get the Personal Edition of RedHat 9.0

Rh 7.2 is a good distribution of Linux.  Make sure that you download and install the patches if this box will be permanently connected to the internet.
