Anyone believe what Microsoft has to say on this? That they want to get at the illegal users with this?

That's an outright lie. But I wouldn't put it past them to make sure that this becomes true with future versions.

windows is so hard to install that you have to have a licensed tech do it so it will not crash? that is what i got from it. the linux install is easy, so is osx. and those do not crash nearly as much as windows does

There's a truth in it somewhere. I have tried to install Windows XP on the latest ASUS motherboard with an AMD Athlon XP 3000+. There whas a BSOD during the installation. Someone who doesn't know how to configure the BIOS in a way that Windows will work with it (most authorized resellers do), can't install Windows XP. One little error in the BIOS settings, and Windows can't handle it anymore and BSOD's your ass in panic. Linux doesn't give up so easily, it tries to run, and with succes most of the time.

No matter if it store bought or not I've seen windows crash!  Infact I know people who went to best buy and/or future shop who bought a pc with windows pre-installed.  Because those places use such shitty hardware with a bad OS its even HARDER to fix not to mention there is clauses in the warrenty that do not cover certin things, like the OS it came with.

So you buy a computer that IS certified and it crashes a day later.  Sorry pal but we don't cover the software, that includes the OS!  What if its the hardware?  It would be cheaper to buy a whole new PC.  Thus they make money off our assess.

Imagine paying up to $2000.00 dollars for a wintel PC only to have it fail and not even a month later having to get a whole new PC, just because its not functioning.  or just live with it crashing every few hours.

damn eh!

So thats why Linux is better!

Its made by people who arn't just out there to make money.  But to provide a better quality product.

I've used pritty much all windows OS'ses and I've ALWAYS found linux to be easier!

I guess this is what happenes when they themselves don't have a clue on what they are doing/or keep copying from other people.  They don't even know their own product(keep stealing!) to make it better so they have to 'start from scratch' with every release!

"Installing Windows XP is not complicated at all, still, it requires that all parts of the computer to be properly functioning."

MY UPGRADE FROM WINDOWS ME TOOK AN ENTIRE DAY, THAT IS A DOWNRIGHT LIE. My install locked up after about being half-way done, then when I tried to restart it, It asked me to insert a CD from a previous version of windows. HP DOESNT PROVIDE WINDOWS ME CDs, They provide recovery CDs that are protected to run only on HPs. I had to borrow a Windows 98 CD from someone. (HAHA @ MICROSOFT, I DON'T NEED A PREVIOUS CD TO UPGRADE, LOL @ POORLY DESIGNED PROTECTION MECHANISM) Anyways, felt that needed to be lifted off my chest.

And no, i'm not the only person (obviously). I've run into other people who upgraded from ME and can relate in the same way.

I find this particular ironic considering my girlfriend's experience with Windows XP.

Case 1) Computer put together from scratch, with Win98SE installed.  Crashes every now and then, and occasionally loses a driver or two, but nothing all that out of the ordinary for Winblows.

Case 2) Dell laptop with Windows XP preinstalled.  The very first time that she turns it on, what happens? "Operating System not found."  Reboot. Then it works.  But randomly doesn't.  The problem turns out to be some garbage in the registry of all things . . .
I can't get over you until you get out from under him.

you people have problems...

windows is bad, but not half as bad as you people are making it out to be. i build my own computers, and i don't have to tweak my bios settings (although i do anyway, eventually) to get windows to work. i don't have to install it 5 times in a row...a simple once or twice a year is good enough. i never have win2k lock up during install (98 is another story...).

oh, and linux, for the most part, is more complex to install. this is only because most people have no idea what a partition is, and to install linux, you have to set up ur partitions. windows does this automaticly (i know that some linux distros can do it automatically too...but only a few).

having said that, plz remember that i use linux

edit: oh, and none of my friends have ever had problems w/ a preinstalled winbox. you must have picked that computer from a real shitty company

SuSE, Mandrake, Lindows, RedHat, Knoppix, Caldera,  xandros, etc.. ALL partition the HD automaticaly!  If your installing linux on a fresh box then you do NOT NEED TO partition the Hard drive!  In windows you CAN"T partition the hard drive unless its NT and if you use two file formats, NTFS/FAT  your asking for problems!

Bottom line. Linux IS easier to install!

Yes ive seen Xpiss crash, I even seen the XBox crash.

It depends on the hard ware.  You can't run windows reliably on any old machine.  for 98/ME i recomend at least 128mb of ram!  But when both those OS'ses came out that wasn't available.  Hence the BSOD!

And yes ME does take a whole day.  you have to restore all the programs you were using (if you don't fuck up the registry first, which would make you start all over again!) and then restore all of the saved files that you were using.  Oh and you have to install the drivers and don't froget that .dat file for you AVS!

Compare this with Linux!  All the software drivers install in an hour, no AVS!  just restore your files and your done!     :D

And upgratding doesn't take hudreds, if not thousands of dollars!

I just took a sleepease, so I appologise if I sound a bit off  :D

i can't beleive i'm actually defending windows...

the most it has ever took me to set up windows after an install is maybe 4 or 5 hours if i have to search online for the drivers (which is a rarity. usually only need drivers for my wireless mouse, network card, video card, and maybe sound), but i usually have those disks/cds on hand. this is including formatting the harddrive and reinstalling all the programs in need/want/use (and i'm an avid gamer, so i install a lot of shit). there is no possible way it would ever take an entire day to configure windows!!!

i am still configuring linux to the way i like it. this is partially because it is so customizable (good) and i'm still fairly new to it (bad).
