installing suse8.0
« on: 18 September 2002, 21:25 »
my setup looks like this...
i have 3 40gig hard drives, and 2 cd drives on a promise ide card. i put the suse cd1 in the cd drive but nothing happens. i changed the boot order in bios, and still nothing. i have windows 2000 on one of the drives, and would like to install suse on one of the other drives. does the problem reside on the cd drives being on the promise card? should i just reorganize the setup? could i have the linux install on a drive that is attached to the card? i did have it installed on another computer, but the main-board crapped out on me before i could get into and learn linux.   :(
thanks in advance

Did you buy the cd's or did someone copy them for you, I heard a few times that perfect iso's weren't bootable anymore, you can browse them but they won't boot your pc.
From what you say, both cd/dvd drives are connected to the Promise card, I would try to connect one of them as master on IDE2, even if it doesn't work it can't hurt.

And what type of Promise controller do you have?
You might wanna check the SuSE Support database as there are a few topics involving installation and Promise controllers

Here's a link to "How to create a system boot cd"
http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/fhassel_bootcd.html
A friend of mine used this method since the iso's I burned for him refused to boot the pc too.
Worked fine afterwards.
