Burning in Linux

Hey all hope you had/having/are going to have a merry christmas.


well, santa brought me a cd burner for christmas (a "designed for windows" burner). but i installed it and it can READ CDs. but how do i write a cd? how can i tell if it will even be able to write CDs?

Any help appreciated!

Now, I just KNOW you're using Linux; which distro?  Have you compiled the kernel with SCSI support (you have to emulate SCSI devices to burn CD's in Linux>0  cdrecord is the basic burning application for Linux; there are a LOT of GUI app's, most of which are just graphical versions of cdrecord.  My PERSONAL opinion is to use cdrecord if you have a limited amount of RAM; why run Xwindow+a window manager while you're burning a CD? (Yes, I know Linux is a true multi-tasking system; I just don't like buffer under-runs).

rightio so i need to recompile the kernel. Ive already got 2.4.20 so how would i recompile with SCSI emulation?

Just say "yes" to SCSI support when you're re-compiling.  You might want to do a Google search for CD-burning in Linux; there's some really good specific How-to's available.  Remember, Google is your friend! >GRIN<

well i used voidmains guide to recompiling the kernel 2.4.20 (thanks voidmain) where do i start in that guide? do i just goto the directory and type make xconfig or do i need to do anything else?

errr, wouldn't it be easyer to add something like

ide-scsi=foo

when foo is the /dev/whatever the burner is

to his boot file?

X-CD-Roast Alpha12 is out, it has direct support for IDE drives on the 2.4 kernel

yeah, i kinda like cdrecord myself. once you memorize it, it take 10 seconds to start burning a disk

and i hope i changed my sig to suit the times better

There already is a bash script for cdrecord.

Its called Magma.
