FreeBSD 4.7 startx issue

question:
i just installed FreeBSD 4.7 on my laptop, when i log in as root, i can startx no problem at all but when i try to start it as a user, i can't. otiginally it told me i needed to be a member of the group 'wheel' to do startx, no problem, added myself in /etc/group, but for some reason i still can't startx as a user.

edit: actually, i can't startx as root either now, and as far as i can tell, the only thing i changed in my XF86Config file was to change the mouse type from ps/2 to usb, and the curious thing is that my mouse now works (and has a 3d look graphical pointer!) in the text-only screen, and i can't startx (most confusing - how's it displaying the mouse pointer if there's no X?)

anyway, here's the error log of both situations. the first is the error log of the user who cannot startx despite being a member of group 'wheel', the second is the error log of the superuser who cannot startx after some slightly odd mouse business went on.

Any help sorting this out will be much appreciated.

it was 'PS/2' to start with (which is what xf86config set it to) but i played around because my laptop's glidepoint is totally incompatible with such a setting, and i wanted to get either my serial port mouse or my usb mouse to work with it (preferably the usb one). that's not the issue with the normal user though i am sure, and as i said i found that USB made the mouse work and have a GUI type pointer even when X is not running (??????????) but all of a sudden X won't start (more ????????)

The second case (not being able to do startx even as root) is definitely a problem that has to do with your mouse's re-configuration that evidently broke your X server.

As for the first case, it's really the first time I see a similar problem, that is not being able to do startx as a normal user. It should have something to do with user permissions. How about trying to create another user from scratch?

The mouse may have worked but the error message clearly states USB protocol isn't recognised, and that's why it bombs out. Just try changing it to IMPS/2.

IMPS/2 is not supported on this platform either, so i changed it back to PS/2 and /dev/sysmouse and now X starts as root but the mouse does not work. i suppose i'll have to search out a way of making a USB mouse work in FreeBSD.

now i created a new user from scratch and the new user has just the same problems that the original user had starting X. exactly the same problems.

freebsd sure is irritating. it has some sort of problem with the keyboard too (not the keymap, the actual pressing of keys et c). plus, where's tab completion? and shift-pageup?

more specifically, i am still clueless about this X thing...

You should be able to see the mouse moving even when X isn't started if you configure it correctly.

I use 4.7 on three machines.  USB mouse works fine on all.  

As far as the shell goes if you want bash you need to install it.  If you installed the ports tree;
cd /usr/ports/shells/bash2 && make all install clean
as root of course. Then you'll need to set it as the default for new users. Try adduser and set it how you want.

I used bash when I first converted to FBSD.
then I started playing with csh (I think it is really a link to tcsh) which is roots default shell.  I love it it autocompletes and if you enter part of a command you can scroll back through the instances of that command in your history... and many more features.  Unless you change it sh is the default for regular users.

well i didn't resolve this unfortunately, the laptop i had freebsd installed on has died and it will be a while before i can afford another computer. if i install freebsd on my desktop computer, the mouse will be a ps/2 one, not a usb one, so i'll never know now, will i?
