and use ext3 or reiserfs instead of ext2. they are both journaling filesystems which helps a lot if you have a powercut or something.

Another thing you should do is to use gnome window manager instead of KDE. I prefer KDE but it will go really slow on a slow computer.

i'd steer clear of gnome, if kde is sluggish.

i would honestly recommend using windowmaker or xfce which are both mature and stable desktop environments, both of which are much closer on the right side of the bugs and incompatibilities horizon than either kde or gnome are.

plus both consume a tiny fraction of the overhead that gnome or kde use.

Thanx for telling me because , b4 I didnt know wtf gnome window maker and kde were lol yeaa im new to linux, is mandrake hard to install it should boot right up from the cd, can I pop the cd into my pc while runnunig xp and use the FAT32 FS ? or should I boot it from start ? I have never installed Linux b4 sry for the n00b questions

mandrake is *very* eas to install, but if you really think the best way is to run windows XP and then install it on a SHIT32 filesystem then you have a lot of headaches coming your way.

simply put the CD for mandrake in your CD and reboot. follow the instructions, remembering to always use the advanced and expert options. don't do anything stupid and come and ask questions if you have questions.

What do u mean by exppert install and dont do anything stupid? is that where I pick the GUI I wanna use or I can switch anytime in root ?

the expert lets you choose more things yourself. Dont use the "recommended install".
Just boot your computer off the CD and it will come up and has pretty good step by step instructions i believe.

By "dont do anything stupid" i believe he means... if you dont know what the hell something is... you might want to ask about it before getting it or not getting it.

Partitioning will be the most difficult bit.  You see Windows and Linux cant use the same part of your hard drive so you need to split it up.

I strongly recommend you read that article I posted a link to, especially the parts on partitioning.

Use the GUI.  Use the GUI.  Use the GUI.
Oh and using a text based non graphical screen isnt what root is about - root can use graphics or text screens, same as any other user.  Root is the superuser, so try not to use it too often.  You'll boot the CD up and it will go into a graphical install menu, from there you can choose "beginner" or "expert."  Expert isnt too hard and gives you a lot more control which is why it's recommended.

Oh and so you dont forget:
Use the GUI.
Read that manual I posted a link to.
