Lycoris install HELP!
« on: 15 September 2002, 22:41 »
The checksum is o.k.

tried 2 different computers: 400mhz and 1.1ghz
tried 2 different iso burns
tried 2 different cd drives. 24x and a hp9100 burner

Lycoris hangs during the install @ 51%, 95%, 91%

What else should I check?
Note: I'm trying to install as a single OS. These are extra computers I have.

I can't really help but, you could try a slow burn of the ISO (2x, $x) and see if that helps.

I haven't used these machines much, but they should   be o.k.

I did check the bios as you suggested, nothing weird.

I am trying it again, and so far it's hanging @ 91%.

This machine is: Thunderbird 1.1ghz
                  MSI k7t turbo2
                  128mb sdram
                  13gig ibm hd
                  Voodoo 3000 agp
                  HP 9100 series burner

I may try the slow burn as a final resort, but if the checksum is o.k., then shouldn't it be 100% good?

if the checksum is correct then it should be burned properly.

Lycoris install HELP!
I pretty much gave up on Lycoris, and if it doesn't install easily, I can't recommend it as a newbie distro.

but, some of you may be glad to know, that I decided to install Redhat on that box, and that went well.

I want to use that box to really learn, and experiment with Linux! Now, I need to figure out how to get that burner working.

edit:
Update: I downloaded the xcdroast RPMs and I RTFM! Hmmm... seems to be working. That wasn't so bad!

I'm downloading the ISO"s for their build 50 (which is the latest beta) right now from a very fat pipe at +/- 600 KB/sec :)
I've toyed around with Red Hat enough to decide I like it better than Mandrake but the differences with SuSE aren't big enough to justify my switching from SuSE to RH.
Gonna try out Lycoris and after tha ELX.
I'll let you know how the install went.

Ok, I had it up and running in 20 minutes.
Linux never ceases to amaze me, a whole OS installed, configured (NICs, printer, etc ...)up and running in 20 minutes!!!!!!!
From what I've seen so far (not much - agreed) it looks as Windows-like as Linux can be atm, plus all the cool extras that Linux delivers.
I didn't test much but audio and video work pretty good, Xine is installed by default (not in SuSE), it has a functionality to help you install software, update on-line, etc.
So far I would definitely recommend this to Windows users who want to try out Linux!
I'll give it a little more testing though.

Are you talking about Lycoris?

Hmmmm... I did a quick search, and haven't found any answers, but the Lycoris forum does have a question about the install hanging at the last screen. I hope to find the answer to this install problem...out of curiosity, and for the sake of SCIENCE!

Yes Lycoris.
I installed the latest beta on a PII 400, it was done in about 25 minutes.
Maybe you should give it a try?
Which build did you try? 46?
I have the iso's from build 46 lying around somewhere, I could give them a try later, just to see what the differences are.

Lycoris install HELP!
Yeah, it was build 46. I just want to try it because I want to use the easiest linux distro to convert windows users.     :D

Hmmmm....I am currently trying to install Mandrake 8.2 on a Gateway gp6-400. It's taking a long time! I did verify the checksums, so the cd is o.k. But the screen says :"time remaining 03:46" that's almost 4 hours! What could be wrong? I already installed suse on it before in about 35 minutes. I am very curious. It's a 400ghz machine with a 13gig hard drive.

edit: It finally finished, not 3 hours though, it just kinda "paused" a lot with some bursts of speed every now and then. It took a little bit over an hour. Maybe it's the machine. One problem though, when it rebooted, it was a command line login...no kde.

Next!

Well...I am trying Lycoris Build 50 now. I am still searching for the ultimate "noob" distro, even though SuSe is probably it.

I know you guys could probably get these distros working easily, but I am curious to see which distro will install brainlessly on the widest range of pc.

Nope! Lycoris hanged @ 97% and it wasn't just a long pause, because I left it on all night. I can't recommend Lycoris since it wont install on these two older machines.
  :(
