Linux trying to be like Windows?

I hear a lot of people say this, basically implying that Linux programmers are talentless hacks with no creativity. This judgement is made by the interface which they are presented with. (Konquerer acts like MSIE with it's web and shell abilities) (does so without all the security holes   )

For those of you who are reading this and think Linux has been ripping off XP and MAC OS X, allow me to get you to think differently.

Let's take a cat (Customer) for instance, and give it a uncaring, abusive owner (Microsoft). Now, the cat has been locked (product activation) outside in freezing cold conditions by "accident". When the owner comes out, the cat is still there and wants back in, regardless of their cruel owner because they are afraid of change, or at least that's what scientists seem to think, and I agree.

The interface isn't a ripoff. It's designed that way so Windows users wont freak out. If you can make winusers feel at home, then they wont have a problem with Linux. In my opinion, making winusers feel at home is clever, and helps the OS gain a greater userbase.

Keep in mind these are the same people who told me they formatted their ROM BIOS, and BIOs was created for MS-DOS. (Oh apparently BIOS is now on the harddrive and computers dont work without windows because its part of the computer).

Microsoft ripped off task grouping, quick lauch, start menu, and lot's of other stuff from KDE, New Deal Office, etc.

I thought the start menu was one of the few original creations from Microsoft. You've heard otherwise? I've read stuff where they say some employee had the idea.

who cares if it was by microsoft their still out numbered... so isn't it windows trying to be like linux?

Linux would only be like Windows if it was full of bugs and security holes.  Whether or not the GUI looks similar, doesn't matter much.  I think that helps, so users of Windows can switch over faster.

Yes, I think that's a good idea: just make Linux look like Win and give it the same ease of use and it will have a real possibility of catching up with MS. You see, although linux has changed over the years, it still scares people (including me) because they think you really have to know what's going on inside a computer before they can use it(rightly or wrongly)But if they can really give linux that ease of use and proof it, I think MS is going to be in bad shape. I would love to see it!

Lordy Lord, Fedora has an update button.  That really made me angry.  Like it is somehow imperative that i upgrade from gclib2.3.3.4.12 to glibc2.3.3.4.13 this fucking instant.  Daily updates are for paranoid freaks, and for users of sloppy operating systems.  Linux doesnt really need that many updates, unless you really want them - and then you can go get them yourself.

Linux, is already easy to use.  Its already the better OS but even if it is its still not going to stop the politics that has been going around for years and thats the problem.

We are still living in a computer illiterate world and even then millions are still switching from M$ to something else.  It just takes time.  When the world has been told over and over that the world is flat then they are just going to believe that but eventualy people will get the idea that the world is really round and not flat at all!

Such things are politics.  The best way is to keep showing those discruntled users that there are machines out there that don't require you to be some sort of computer nerd just to get something running which is often requiered on windows.

With mac and linux it just runns.  No tinkering involved.

Yea, but see if everyone uses it, it wont be cool anymore, like smoking, its cooler to quit then smoke nowdays because everyone did it, or me, i used to be cool, now everyones like me its not cool.

I guess when Linux is popular and less cool, theres always the alan cox fork.
