Well, the first time I installed Mandrake I messed up so that there was only 5GB of my harddrive used. So I re-installed and got it to use all of my 40GB. This time instead of clicking recommended or whatever. I clicked everything besides the language packages.

The first time I installed when I logged in it would allow me to type in a name and then a password. I liked that much better so I could just login root that way if needed. Now, it just let's me click my name.

My intention was to change it to one of the themes on art.gnome.org, but the gdmsetup and everything went okay. But it's still the same as it was before.

I don't understand what you're trying to do. Are you currently not using gdm but trying to switch to it? Or are you already using gdm but it isn't working?

And there's no reason you should ever need to log in as root.

Yes I am trying to switch it... It says I am currently running xdm... I then rebooted my computer now I get a konsole. That asks me to login... so I logged in and it gives me the command line I typed xdm and it says only root should want to run xdm. So I logout and login as root and run xdm. It takes me to a login screen that simply asks for a username and password. Then automatically logins me in on KDE. This I don't like because I like gnome much better.

Do you have the file /etc/sysconfig/desktop?
If so try adding the line
DISPLAYMANAGER="gdm"
to it.

Well presumably you have the file /etc/X11/prefdm? Does that have some reference to xdm in it?

*Go to "Mandrake control center".
*Click on "Hardware".
*Select "Display Manager Chooser"
*Select GDM.
