startx interface question

can anyone tell me how i can run both GNOME and KDE at once and just toggle between them running redhat7.2 ..i'm sure there is something simple i'm mising i know you can run multiple desktops but don't know how to do that..

Do you have a dual head machine (two monitors, two video cards, or a multihead video card)?  I have done this on dual head machine, ran one window manager on the left display and another on the right display, pretty slick.  But you should be able to do this on a single head machine, although I don't quite know why you would want to since Gnome apps will run under KDE and KDE apps will run under Gnome.  I'll play around and see if I can figure out a way to do this and let you know (let me know if you figure it out).  I recall doing something similar in X on an RS/6000.

OK, this *is* very easy.  Just type "startx -- :1"  which will start up a second Xserver on :1 rather than :0.  To toggle to your first display do a <CTRL><ALT><F7> and to get to the second display do a <CTRL><ALT><F8>.  

In case the above isn't too clear, here is exactly what I just did to get two copies of X running, one with KDE and one with Gnome.  It is a manual way but you could easily automate it:

1) log in to KDE normally.
2) type "switchdesk GNOME"
3) type "startx -- :1"
4) press <CNTRL><ALT><F7> for KDE
5) press <CNTRL><ALT><F8> for Gnome

this worked fine for me too.... except...

As detailed elsewhere, i have a little problem with running X and at the moment, when X exits, the screen freezes, as X exits, but does not hand the screen back. This makes :1 totally unusable, so if i started X on :1, then closed it, the screen on :1 freezes.
This in mind, anybody got any idea of a way that another X session can be started in a window?
Oh, one other thing, i think i remember that i had to log on as a different user to get a second X session running. Is this right? if so how do i work around it?
