Simple Linux DVD question
« on: 29 January 2004, 00:31 »
I often times want to take screenshots of the movie Im watching while using Ogle. When I take a screenshot, the screen always is blank and blue. How do I take a screenshot of the DVD?

Well in most software DVD players, the video isn't written directly to video memory, so taking a screenshot is impossible.  The performance is better apparently (plus it's a great anti-piracy thing for MS  :D ).

You might be able to turn off the feature that writes to video overlay (instead of memory) but I don't know how to do it.

The problem is that the video is output in overlay mode, which means it isnt processed by the graphics card as the other windows, rather layed on top.
There is a program in linux that can capture overlayed content but I can't for the life of me remember what it's called - perhaps someone else knows.
In the meantime Ogle can make screenshots of DVD.
Contains scenes of mild peril.

You just need to set the video output driver appropriately. In mplayer you'd change it from xv to x11, which does the trick. Presumably you can do the same in ogle.
