if you don't want bloat and want to keep simplicity and lack of features closest to that of windows, i'm thinking lycrosis LX. (not sure if you have to pay or not, i downloaded it for free). i prefer redhat to mandrake, but they both come with a lot more than you'd probably need.

Note though, that with either Redhat or Mandrake, while they are bloated with the full install, you can choose which packages you want during installation, making it only as bloated as you want it to be.  I like Redhat a bit better, but still find Mandrake easier.  I've never used lycrosis.

mandrake is as good as any for a start off. it provides everything windows does, and much more.

once you get more comfortable with mandrake, you might want to try some others, you might not. either way, mandrake is a good starting point for a 'PC' based non-windows system.

But Red-Hats better in my opinion!

its possible, but a very very sick combination, i know from experiance/*read some stuff from way back that i posted*/ it would be better to use linux on a server then winxp. and i guess im moving this to the linux forum cuase its more relevent that "other os's"/*this is meant for odd things, and linux is pretty common by the things in here*/. so for linux i would say that lycoris probably doens't have that much bloat. but what alot of people fail to see, is that a most linux distros have the same/*if not more*/ functionabilty then a windows box with alot of addons. thats why its a three or so cd download, its packed full of things to use. you barely have to install more stuff to get a fully working desktop/*in some cases nothing*/

i was just in your position last week.
ive tried lycros/lx, suse 8.1 live eval, knoppix, vector, evil entity(bad iso wouldnt instal properly, looks great tho on screenshots) and redhat 8. what i have found that all installed easily enough, i have 3 more to try out before i make a a permant choice.i found lycros to be noob freindly because it looks like xp. by far red hat8 has been the best choice at this point. i have a strong liking to it. its cake to install, everything worked, the menus where not as clutered (gnome desktop i think) and it "feels" solid. just understand, from what ive seen the difference between win and linux is the difference from a 6piece "cheap" set of tools and a full snap-on roll away full of tools. it can be imtimidating or liberating.once i get my audio recording studio converted and my games loaded and working i will be throwing my windows cd's in the lake   :D      :D

I hope that lake wasn't a drinking water supply, I know that in England there are stict laws about polluting drinking supplies. Now throwing Windows in there, that could be veeeery dangerous for you and you neighbours.....

All you people and your easy installs, bah!

Everytime I tried to install RH 8.0 or Mandrake 9.0 on my HD (complete install no dual boot), I either got a kernel panic: no init found and it wouldn't load, or it wouldn't install my vid card and thus I could not start xwindows *sigh*
