This I dont understand about RedHat
« on: 15 July 2002, 11:08 »
I went to their Web site and am Dloading 7.3.

The download indicator says and i shit you NOT....."One day and Four Hours remaining".

Anyway. I went to the link where you can purchase ReHat and it had these:

Red Hat Linux Advanced Server  $799.00

Red Hat Linux Advanced Server
V2.1 - Standard Edition  $1499.00

Red Hat Linux Advanced Server
V2.1 - Premium Edition  $2499

Now since its Open Source, why would anyone want to buy these? Are these Versions that have programs in it that you cant Download for free yet they are open Source?
Yeah

The paied versions include support and alot (depends on the version) of programs that you have to pay for (and are closed source).

Yes, most of that cost is in server level/corporate level support.  Also they used to ship an Oracle version of RedHat that cost quite a bit. Ever price Oracle?

And I regularly download RedHat ISO images from http://www.linuxiso.org in less than a couple of hours on Cable.

The Red Hat download is about three CD's worth of image files.  On a dial-up modem at optimum speed, you REALLY ARE looking at about 30-plus hours.  Ma Bell actually only supports 52,400 baud despite your modem saying that it is 56K.  If you are more than 1 1/2 line miles from your telephone exchange, your modem speed will start dropping proportionally.  (I know folks who are limited to 33,300 on dial-up because of the distance issue.)

If you must download it, find a friend who has a broadband connection (cable modem or DSL) and a CD burner.  (either that or just be VERY patient) Also, some of the mirror sites that have the Red Hat images are faster than others.  I have even downloaded Red Hat 7.2 from the NOAA FTP mirror site.  The FTP client that you use can make a difference as well.

The Red Hat boxed set with good documentation and support included is only about 50 bucks.  You might find it worth it for the additional stuff that you get and the convenience of an OEM product (if you are willing to part with the money).

Happy Hunting

And there are sites that sell the same 3 CD RedHat set for about 3 or 4 bucks and will ship it to you. Of course that is without hard bound documentation or support. You'll get the same as if you download and burn the CDs yourself.

Well, if you're using a 56K modem you're looking at a day and something of downloading. If I were in your place, I'd follow VoidMain's advice and order the ISO's. There are sites out there that ship them with 3 or 4 bucks only.

just take the two days to download them. IF your on 56K you cant expect it any faster.
I used to live 35 KM from my ISP on dial-up with a 56K modem. I got about 50K regularly just because we lived about 50 Metres from a T1 line going into the city where my ISP was located.
