Munich, which is widely viewed as the IT capital of Germany, is considering a switch from Microsoft to Linux following a study that claims the city will save money and increase security with open-source software, the newspaper reported Friday.

Microsoft is worried that if a big German city like Munich falls into the Linux camp, others will follow, according to the report.

Speaking of pathetic, my country's entire intenet backbone (well, at leats our most popular ISP, anyway) merged with MSN.

Dear god.  People, pray that you never meet XtraMSN

Or NineMSN

I live in Vancouver BC just north of the assholes in Redmond.  Our Provincial government just decided to Redo its entire website (ground up).  New Hard ware/ Soft ware all the bells and whistles, and all just in time for Microsoft Server 2003,  a budjet of $2mil CAN (15 bucks American) was announced. sofar they have spent, get this....... ready,  18 fuckin million.  I know most of that money goes to IT paychecks, but man, Linux Servers could have saved a bunch a moolah.

The tide will turn if it hasn't already. I am surprised at any government agency sticking with M$, really surprised.
One of the biggest hurdles when making the migration is getting past the executives who have been brought up with Window$ products. They just don't relish the thought of changing. These people should be removed from the decision making process. The criteria for change (or not) has many factors but an executive (or any user group) that just throws its hands up because it would require a bit of effort on their part should not be allowed into the decision making process. This applies to all IT implementations not just Linux. Lazy IT managers are also a problem. They don't want the hassle of something unfamiliar. If an IT manager goes to the board and says "Hey, cut me a check for $250,000 for our M$ license" with no alternatives, something is wrong.

Munich/Germany is just the beginning

ROFL, why should I pay those 10% to Microsoft if the alternative is free?  :D

Oh and this is interesting

Ballmer sells alot of MS stocks off...

Hahaha, maybe he has had a terrible omen about the next 6 months, after his staggering defeat in Germany. I hope this is a nice domino effect.
