Another .rpm question

Hi All,

Still running RH 6.2 and still having difficulties installing many .rpm files.  Today I tried to install gaim and got the following error messages

# rpm -Uvh gaim-0.59.5-1.i386.rpm
:failed dependencies:
   rpmlib (PayloadFilesHavePrefix) <= 4.0-1 is needed by gaim-0.59.5-1.i386.rpm
   rpmlib (CompressedFileNames) <= 3.0.4-1 is needed by gaim-0.59.5-1.i386.rpm
   libgdk_pixbuf.so.2  is needed by gaim-0.59.5-1.i386.rpm
    lib.so.6(GLIBC_2.2) is needed by gaim-0.59.5-1.i386.rpm

I seem to get errors similar to this almost every time I try to install a .rpm file.  I know that I'm running an older version of Red Hat, but is it possible to just update these files and be able to install programs?  I went to RedHat.com to see if they might be available there and also did a Google search for "rpmlib" and got lots of hits, but didn't find any place to download these files from.  

Also, if I do find a source for these files, where should they be copied to and should older versions be overwritted or saved.

why do you use redhat 6.2???????????

Since you are on RH62 the first thing you need to do is upgrade your version of RPM. Go to redhat.com and under Support find the Errata section for RedHat 6.2. Get the RPM updates of RPM. Many RPMs out there today need RPM >= v4. Also before you can install an RPM you need to satisfy the dependencies by installing/upgrading any dependant RPMs.

I also have rpm problems (but then I am on a slack box, and since it is my first and only distro right now, it is in bad need of a cleaning).  If I try to install an rpm, it complains about missing dependancies (like bash, glibc's, and other basic necessary utilities), so I end up using the "--no-deps" flag.  If it is for something that I have not used the rpm for before, everything goes smoothly.  If I try to uninstall it, it complains that it isn't installed.  If I try to re-install it, it complains that it is already installed.

Any ideas?

When did Slackware start using RPM?

It doesnt really void, It's just a kinda half-hearted concession. I dont understand why you would want RPM on slackware though, if you want RPM you should really use an RPM based distro.

beltorak0 - Use .tgz packages with installpkg etc.
Slackware's website has a section about installing and managing .tqz's.

ya Slackware has rpm support... i havent tried it.
There is also an rpm2tgz program with slackware. I havent tried it either.
