if i wanted to get into a bit more "advanced" linux version, which should i choose? I was thinking about something like SlackWare or Debian. I am also going to install FreeBSD (on a different computer).

try linux from scratch or byo linux. i think they are just at byolinux.org and linuxfromscratch.org but do a search......
