Mandrake help!
« on: 26 May 2003, 11:11 »
Well I just installed madrake 9 and am probably making some
really stuped mistakes, but anyhow anyone that can help.. I
need some.

My problem is I cant get my internet connection working well at all.

Let say I use gome-ppp (KDE), when it sort of connects it says
'pppd daemon died unexpectly'

I use Kpp and it says 'can not load ruleset "largentina.rst/"
and "pppd died unexpectly".

Just crazy things like that, anyone can help?
Am I ment to do a whole lot of installing first or something?

Dunno about gnome but kppp on mine the argentina thing is under accounting why its default i wouldnt know. Make sure you go through all the tabs and can query / detect your modem ok.

first of all there might be a problem with kppp. Try this to connect to the internet.

#ifup ppp0

I had a similar problem with Mandrake 8.1 years ago.

From a (quick) google search that would be an internal right?  Do you know whether or not it is a hardware / software modem?
Yesterday it worked
Today it is not working
Windows is like that

Im sorry if I did not explain this well. This is a command you would type into a terminal. Open up Konsole, or xterm and su to root. Next type in "ifup ppp0" This tells the computer to try and connect to the internet using the dialup adapter(ppp0). I thought kppp might be your problem because I had a problem with kppp in mandrake 8.1.

I'd never switch to ADSL. Cable is so easy to set up in Linux, that you actually don't have to. Detects your networkcard, queries your DHCP server, and then it's all done.

Ok I tyed that and it sort of dialed... but then
did nothing else... so I dont know

Anyway the bigger problem is that when I entered
linux this time for some damn reason it didnt detect my sound card.. Then all the destop icons
dissapeared and I couldnt use the right click on
my mouse!!!

I think its time for a reinstall yes?

I forgot to ask. Was your modem automatically picked up during installation by Harddrake? If not, did you load any drivers for your modem?

Just remembered. Have you run wvdial from the terminal? If not, do the following:

Code: [Select]

After you execute wvdial, please tell me what the output is.
