« on: 27 January 2003, 03:00 »
i just reformatted/fdisked my new laptop (toshiba) and installed win2k. i left about 5gb for linux (of a 20gb hd), but when i start the linux setup, it seems to lock up when trying to initiallizing pc cards...i don't have any pc cards for my laptop yet, so i don't know what it is trying to initialize...

Well, that page doesn't really say squat about the hardware that is in it. And Red Hat didn't have a listing in their hardware compatibility for a single Toshiba laptop. http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/toshiba.html had no listing for either the S123 or S103.

However, google gave me this for like the first or second hit:

http://home.gagme.com/greg/linux/toshiba1115.php

If that doesn't work, also add "nousb" at the boot prompt..

which I suspect will get you going. And <snip> is another message that should work if this first one doesn't help.

Not to be rude (this isn't even my thread), but could you edit that post?

Damn, give me at least 3 minutes instead of the 2 you gave me.    There must be a limit to the length of a url in a URL tag. I couldn't get the URL tag to work with the link titled "Newsgroup Posting on Linux and s103" on this page.

You should be warned Toshiba seem to have gained a reputation, and from personal experience this seems to be proven out, of using proprietary hardware that is really incompatable with Linux. This may just be their use of cheap components to achieve lower prices, and is probably accidental, but it removes me from their client list until they change their ways.

Funny. I own two Toshiba Satellite models, a 1730CDT and a 1400-103 and I never had any serious problems with Linux apart from the modem on the latter not working, but that's no real problem.    ;)

I also haven't had any problems with the PCMCIA card slots, that are listed as Toshiba ToPIC100 Card controllers. For your information I've installed SuSE Linux 8.0, 8.1, Mandrake 9.0 and RedHat 8.0 flawlessly.

On your previous topic about your Toshiba I gave you a link to Toshiba's unofficial Linux and alternative OSs page. Please do me a favor and check there also. It could help you know.
