install/uninstall things

i tryied to install X-cdroast on my computer.
I did unzipped/ "untar?" and then did "make INSTALL". I wasnt in as root and it installed some files and then said "error:cant make directories XXX/XXX". when i did "make INSTALL" again it says that everything installed and there is nothing to do. What do i need to do to finish installing X-cdroast?

# cd /xcdroastsourcedir
# make install

But before you did a "make" did you do a "./configure"? Also, what OS are you running? It could make a difference.

And if it's still not installing properly do a "make clean;make;make install".

i didnt do a ./configure, i'm using red hat 7.2. I think i may have gotten xcdroast to work though, i'm gonna try using it to burn FreeBSD after i finish downloading the ISO(s).

Well you have the RPM for it on your RedHat CD. Why wouldn't you just take the easy way out and install the RPM?  Also you can get the latest version of it from www.rpmfind.net if you just need a later version. The advantage of using the RPM is you can uninstall it cleanly if you need to.  And if you just want to recompile it you can download and install the SRC RPM and use "rpm" to rebuild a new freshly compiled RPM that you can install and still have the advantages of being able to uninstall if you want.

a few minutes before you posted this i did get/use the RPM and now i just finished burning FreeBSD onto two CD's. Planning to install it right now.
     

this will be the first time i have restarted  my computer since i installed red hat... hmmm, when i installed windows i remember restarting at least twice a day every day for the first week.

wait, what? are you really saying that freeBSD is on the red hat CDs?

huh?? what the hell are you talking about.... We're talking about X-CDroast. X-CDroast has an RPM on the red hat CD. I dont think its a typographical error, but merely an error of perception.

i screwed up that last post, because was using Lynx, and got confoozled. Just ignore most of the stuff you saw in this thread, in fact.. act as if it didnt exist.
